Hello everyone and thanks again for your never ending support. To make the story short here is my question. My fiance is now 2 months pregnant and going 3 months pregnant next month. I already bought her a plance ticket in transit to Guam next month along with our 2 year old US Citizen son. I am not very familiar here in Guam as far as adding fiance on a Health Insurance. Does anyone of you guys has experienced adding your fiance on your Health Insurance here in Guam? Am I in trouble since it's not an open season yet for Health Benefits? The FEHB I have is under Kaiser Permanente and I don't think it's covered in Guam. Please everyone I need your help on this. Thank you all..

WOW! That is a tough question: I don't think you can add her until your Married. In addition; She has a Pre-Existing Condition.

You can add your financee when you get married (she becomes your wife),it is classified as a life changing event. You may have to wait until it's open season to add your son if he is not already on your policy.

The pre-existing condition exclusion is waived if the person is pregnant. It's against HIPAA to exclude someone as a pre-existing condition if they are pregnant.

To add, the pre-existing condition is waived for pregnancy but there are a lot of loopholes to allow insurers to avoid paying. If you have employee-based insurance, they will probably be forced to pay anyway but private insurance often has a clause ie maternity coverage not valid for 12 months after being added.

As mentioned, marriage is a life-changing event so you can add your wife upon marriage. Your son will probably not be eligible until open enrollment.

You are in trouble because you have no insurable interest in her until you are married. You can usually get her enrolled starting the first of the month following your marriage. Usually they allow you open enrollment for a change of life status (marriage) but check with your insurance carrier.

As a general rule, when you get married, you can add your new spouse and add any new dependants at that time also. Marriage is one of several qualifying events that allow you to make changes to pretax deductable benefits outside of open enrollment. The benefit changes generally must also be done within 30 days of the event. You would have to check with your employee benefits or HR for specific details of your plan.

For the health plan, you will have to call the member services for the specifics of coverage. This will depend a lot though, on if you are you a resident of Guam, or if you are asking about out of area coverage for Guam.
