My wife and I are now US Citizens. We were granted name change during the process (mainly changed our last names). Our issue concerns our children who are all minors and were born here in the US. My wife and I are not separated/or divorced but would like to find out the easiest way for our children to legally acquire our new last names? Where should we start? thanks

The procedure is depending what state you are living in.

Do a search about name change of children xx (xx=state you live in). You will get websites that are selling name change kits, you don't need that! Find a website that tells you how the process is in your state!

Another possibility is to get the information from your court house. They normally all have websites. Mostly you can download the forms and instructions on how to fill them out or they have some legal assistance that you can call.

You need to fill out some forms (for each child) and you might have to go in front of the judge and state the reasons.

Then you have to file for an amended birth certificate (sometimes the court will submit the information to vital statistics) and then for a new passport with the changed name and change with Social Security.

We adopted our children (stepparent adoption with deceased other parent) and did all by ourselves. If you did USCIS by yourself, you can do that too.

I did this like 30 years ago, only piece of paper you want is a new birth certificate for each kid with yours and your kids name on it. Hired an attorney, was something like a hundred bucks for both kids, and was done in Illinois. Was also earning a lot more money back then so was like pennies, how this country has changed since then. We had to appear before a judge, was a very pleasant experience as I recall.

Another thing that changed was having a natural born kid, prenatal care, delivery, four days in the hospital, and post natal care for a normal birth was like 450 bucks. Just got a new grandson, but only a day and half in the hospital with an insurance plan that cost 1,200 bucks a month, that only covered part of it. Cost my son an extra 5,200 bucks for his share. That also changed. How about paying one years property taxes is a half a weeks paycheck!

Thanks for the big help and the reassurance that we can do it! Didnt know how much I would need to do just to have name change....We have gotten in touch with our local court house and its $337! here in Cook County Illinois. Since the kids were born in a different state, will we encounter any issues to amend their birth certificate?
