I have no idea if it is what is causing your problems but I have come across two issues:

- I had to have a background check for my new job and when they entered my SSN it came back as invalid. When I called the helpline number they told me that on their system my first and middle names had been entered without a space, even though there was a space on the card I had received. That meant that there was a mismatch between the name being entered and the name in the system. I had to go to the local SS office and they corrected it and ordered me a new card.

- When I was trying to work out could be wrong with my card I came across randomization. Since June 2011 SSN numbers are being randomly produced and some systems have not been updated to deal with that.

I don't know which was the problem in my case but it seems to have gone through since I got the new card.

I had the same issue initially until I signed up for Time Warner in my name. They couldn't verify it either but I took my ID and SSN card to an office. Once I signed up with them, I have not had an issue again.

Have your spouse add your name and SSN to a joint bank account and investments. See how soon you will get the pre-approved CC offers  . It maybe an issue of wrong info at the SSA but I think it is an issue of a new SSN not being in any of the credit reporting agency's sytstem's. You would be amazed at how those three companies run our lives when it comes to the cost of credit being issued to you and if you have not had a credit history and are not in there system, then I am sorry, you do not exist.

What sort of Investments are you suggesting? Home title? My husband and I have a small bank a/c together, but its really on a shopping a/c....should we be joint in more items?

What kind of things are you signing up for using your SSN? If it's for credit cards, it's probably because you have no credit history in the US.

I have a secured credit card in my name so it works to some degree, but I just tried to change electric companies and put it in my name using my ssn, but it wouldn't work/recognize me. There have been numerous things like that.

To me that is a personal choice. Putting someone on the mortgage just to satisfy the USCIS but costs several thousands of dollars in interest in not a good move. The investments I am talking about are mutual funds, 401k, bank accounts, CC. For AOS and ROC IMHO the USCIS looks for filing tax returns together as one of the more important items as most all married couples file taxes. After that it is up to you as to how much co-mingling is done.

For your SSN issue, I think it is a matter of time. My wife had her SSN for 3 months and tried for a Macy's card--got denied. About two months later we applied for a joint CC at our bank, plus I put her on the checking and savings account and she opened her own account. Now she gets all kinds of CC offers in the mail. So you need to get your SSN out there so it can be reported to the big three credit agencies. Right now you may be in one and depending on which one they check, you either come up or not. If not then you get denied for having no credit history. You are in the same boat as most college age people just leaving home for the first time except you have a spouse that you can "ride the coat tails of".
