Funny seeing my old post in this thread. I called TD today to update my address because my credit card expires soon and I wanted them to mail it to the correct address- well they told me they have a non-residency policy and they couldn't issue me a new credit card card and that my current card would become inactive. I was expecting to hear that though and the guy was really nice about it so I guess I don't mind that much. He checked with his supervisor if there was any which they could get around it and issue me a new card but apparently not. He said that sometimes they'll re-issue cards if they're mingled with mortgages or assets or something but since mine wasn't I don't get a new card. :/

I updated my TD bank account address with no problem.

Okay, I called them again because I had a question about my bank account (I'm not sure if I'm still allowed to have a bank card?) I explained the situation and the lady INSISTED that the information I got from someone else from the same number ten minutes ago was incorrect and that my credit card was fine... even though it says right on the TD website they have a non residency policy? #######. The left hand doesn't know what the right one is doing. Though, the website simply says they cannot open accounts for US or Australian residents, it doesn't say anything about maintaining bank accounts or credit cards: http://www.tdwaterhouse.ca/services/otherfeatures.jsp#nonresident

Does anyone know if the non residency policy applies to bank accounts? :/

The only company I've heard of that does close down accounts whose owners move out of Canada is PC Financial (which is primarily why they don't know my new address). I was able to change the address on my RBC visa with no problems. Don't know specifically about TD.

I have a PC Financial account and was thinking of just changing my address to my mom's until I need to close it down.

I have a PC Financial account and was thinking of just changing my address to my mom's until I need to close it down.

Thats what I did. If you tel them ur moving to the USA--They will close ur account. A few yrs back I went into the Superstore and talked with a PC Rep and I slipped up momentarily that I was living in the USA--He wanted to close the acct then---Then I stated I was only working their for a bit,lol When I first moved down in 2004, they were very firm about closing the acct!! So Just listed my parents addy in Sask. And keep a very min balance, less than a $1 and tx $$ back and forth now and then to keep it active

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Though the posts weren't directed at me personally- I would list a Canadian address if I could, but I am not in touch with anyone in Canada who's address I could use, otherwise I would. :/ I'm a little worried now. I wish the reps on the TD help line were better informed because they give me different answers.

It's just strange because I went to a branch right before moving and told the lady straight up I was moving to the US, changed my address and everything- I've been receiving paper statements from them- and NOW it's a problem? ugh.

I called TD to change my name and they cancelled my Visa credit card.. There should be a thread somewhere back about it. It was super annoying because no one warned me of that at the bank. :/

I did just get a visa debit card sent from them, at least.. Not a credit card but allows me to make online purchases if I want, I think.

It most certainly doesn't considering I'm the USC and I had a TD account for a while.

The Canadian Visa cards are iffy.

I've had issues trying to use my husband's on certain sites.

His is CBIC, but still, canadian, obviously.

I tried to get an explanation from the lady and it was like she just wasn't understanding my issue.

I think PERSONALLY it has to do with the fact that CBIC cards are NOT stamped with a name on them.

Obviously a name is associated with it, but idk, I just feel like that has something to do with it and who knows, maybe my husband's name is spelled wrong in their approval system or SOMETHING.

I just know for some things, no issues, for others, just complete denial for no reason.

Well, I logged into easyweb today and my bank account is still active, but my credit card account has vanished. The TD guy said it would still appear, just be inactive, so I could make payments to it online. But it's not there, ugh. Gotta call them again.

My card has my name on it, so hopefully it'll work alright online. Don't really need to test it right now though. Actually, they sent me one with my old name a couple of weeks ago and I ended up having my brother go to the bank and change it for me (as my power of attorney). I phoned them and they said they wouldn't send me a new card, but they did.

Same happened for me, but I hadn't been using my card so didn't have any payments to make, fortunately. You won't lose your bank account by moving (and I don't think they could do that anyway because it's your money).

Their non-residency policy must be relatively new. When I moved here, I transferred all of my banking information to my US address. MY TD account cheques even have my US address printed on them and I maintain an active account in Canada. I also transferred my TD Visa card and used it in the US for my first few years here. It was renewed automatically and sent to my US address. I used the card less and less and when it was time to renew it again and I didn't receive any information about renewing it, I called TD and spoke with their customer service. She explained that it had been cancelled since I hadn't used it for a certain period of time and I couldn't re-new it or re-apply unless I had Canadian based credit. I do still have my debit card that I can use when in Canada and used most recently last summer. So, I think the residency requirements for credit cards must be related to the lack of Canadian credit to support the cards and is a development within the last few years because it wasn't a problem in my first 5 years here.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Has anyone else successfully kept their TD Visa while moving to the US? It's my longest standing credit source, so I kind of hate to close it down. I opened an RBC account that can still access my Canadian credit, which is why I even care. I didn't get a CC through RBC yet though. Now I'm considering it.

It came about when I called to change my address with TD (POE is Sunday!!) and she says "we're going to have to close that on you, sorry. You can't have it living in the US". She was "nice" enough to not cancel it on the spot and let me keep it for a few months but what the hell? Now I'm not changing my address for my other CC for fear they'll do the same thing. Anyone else had success in keeping their cards or am I delusional and SOL?

Thursdayschild, that sucks b|||s! I still have my account with RBC and my RBC Visa account plus my line of credit. They just changed my address and I was good to go.
