TD canceling my Visa becase moving to the US?

Has anyone else successfully kept their TD Visa while moving to the US? It's my longest standing credit source, so I kind of hate to close it down. I opened an RBC account that can still access my Canadian credit, which is why I even care. I didn't get a CC through RBC yet though. Now I'm considering it.

It came about when I called to change my address with TD (POE is Sunday!!) and she says "we're going to have to close that on you, sorry. You can't have it living in the US". She was "nice" enough to not cancel it on the spot and let me keep it for a few months but what the hell? Now I'm not changing my address for my other CC for fear they'll do the same thing. Anyone else had success in keeping their cards or am I delusional and SOL?

That makes on sense to me at all personally. I would call the customer service line or ask to speak with the bank manager in regard to this.

Good luck!

I still have my TD Visa credit card intact 6 months after moving to the US. I made an appointment at the bank a few days before my POE and had them change all my addresses. There is no reason for them to shut it down- you should be allowed to retain your card. I've used it many time for purchases here in the US and simply pay it online.

I would make an appointment with someone at the bank to sort it out. They'll also tell you what charges to expect when using your card in the US.

No one told me to cancel my visa. I use scotiabank and I didn't update my address because my mom has POA on my account. I don't see why they'd have a problem as long as you continued to pay. As others suggested you should call customer service.

The only company I've heard of that does close down accounts whose owners move out of Canada is PC Financial (which is primarily why they don't know my new address). I was able to change the address on my RBC visa with no problems. Don't know specifically about TD.

i've been here two years and i've had mine. they had quite a few issues getting the change of address done but i get my statements etc eveyr month from them. i only recently closed teh account since i dont use it and didn't want to pay the yearly fees anymore which went up. ignore them they dont have to close it. in fact i called the non long distance number the normal toronto one i believe and the guy had no issue setting it all up for my us address.

PC tried to close my down--so I just gave them my parents addy in Sask!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Glad to know I'm not crazy. I checked online and they changed my address to the US address I gave them, so we'll see what happens to the card. Hopefully the girl was just wrong and nothing will happen.

Thanks for the responses! Glad to know I'm not asking too much to keep it up and running.

Almost 5 yrs ago they told me that so I changed my address to my parents'. I paid off my outstanding balance by having my Dad deposit $$ into my TD bank account so as far as they were concerned it was fine.

I wentin a couple years ago when I was back home to deposit some cash and the tellar told me no problem, she would be able to change my address so right then and there we changed everything over with the account manager, no problem. In fact they just mailed my new credit card to my US address a few months back. The person you spoke to is full of #######.

Every once in a while they mail something to my parents but I went mostly paperless so its only new cards or offers that get mailed.

The only issue I had when I moved is the credit bureau stopped reporting to them or something so when it came time to renew they had to re-qualify me? I have excellent credit and everything but because of just having moved and no job they were unable to reinstate it for me at that time. Didn't really bother once I got my new job as I pretty much closed down all my accounts up there now as they are charging me monthly fees on things I cant use.

I have a TD visa and even changed to a different one with no problems at all.

They tried to tell me that I couldn't have a card either when I first moved, but ended up calling back and speaking to someone else who changed the address no problem. It was annoying because they also said they couldn't send me a new card at one point to a US address. I don't even use my Canadian card anymore, I'm just keeping it on the off chance I move back since it's my only Canadian card.

I keep a Canadian TD bank account too, and they had no problems changing my address, but could only do it AFTER I moved, which was a bit of a pain. They wanted to see a bill or ID with my new address on it.

I've pretty much gone all paperless now though, which I recommend to everyone!
