James and Dooley both very well could've made different decisions that day. So because things like this will happen when folks exercise free will, the rest of us should not pay the price of not being allowed to exercise our right of the Second Amendment.

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!" - Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945.

It sounded like an accidental discharge by all accounts. Are there any stats to show a higher death rate?

There are stats that show that the number of non-prosecuted homicides has tripled. That's bad enough a statistic for me. The bar set by Florida's 'stand your ground' is set so low that all it takes for one to get off is to show that you 'reasonably believe' to be in danger to use deadly force. In 2009, twice a week there was a claim of justified homicide on average. That's over 100 dead people in a year where the killer walks. I can find no comfort in that. None at all.

Yes I see:

2007: 102.

2008: 93.

2009: 105

I wonder how many of those people saved themselves from personal harm? Unless Florida's judicial system is rigged I bet its a very high percentage.

I mean if its just shifting the figures from the rape/murder/assault column (victims) to the justified homicide column (attackers)....well sounds like a good thing to me.

We heard the same thing this last year when Wisconsin became the 42nd state to allow "shall issue" concealed carry. We still get the "blood will run in the streets" prediction as if it will happen in Wisconsin but no where else.

We will see a trickle of these states allowing permitless carry. 5 now. Another 3-4 this year, 3-4 next year, then a flood of states will approve it as it is seen that crime goes down. I would guess in another dozen years we may have every state that currenty issues the permits to have switched to permitless carry, another 2-3 will be forced to by court order. California is high on that list.

Everything is going along just fine, right to plan. Step by step.

With Sacramento being populated predominantly by leftist, statist, marxist, liberals and hard core LWNJs, it will take nothing less than a court order. Those clowns in Sacramento would never voluntarily legislate "shall issue" and the thought of non residents legally allowed to carry concealed would cause blood to shoot from their eyes.

Why would the judicial system have to be rigged? The law is clear. If you 'reasonably believe' to be in danger, you get to kill. And the judiciary can't touch you. How is anyone ever going to prove that you did not 'reasonably believe' to have been in danger? There's only one person that knows whether you did or did not feel in danger. And that person is you - the killer.

There are many less homicides in FL than there used to be, the crime rate has decreased. At the end of the day less homicide is a good thing.

Seems like an interesting side benft to a RIGHT.

Even if the addition of more people carrying firearms did not reduce crime, it is still a RIGHT.

I do not believe in "Shoot 'n release" If ever it becomes necessary for me to produce a firearm to defend myself I have every intent of killing whomever it is that threatens me. I am not going to shoot him in the finger, I go for center mass. Heart/lungs. I load the gun with the most destructive, devastating ammunition specifically designed to inflict as much damage as possible...and then hope I never have to use it

THIS is why societies that are armed are safe. THIS is why Vermont has low crime. THIS is why South Dakota will see a reduction in crime. When it becomes a HUGE risk for criminals to threaten law innocent people...they stop.

So be it. The good news is with the recent decision about Maryland there are only a few states left with this racist rationing of rights. It should be fairly easy to pick them off one by one if necessary. EACH case brought before a court is carefully crafted to affect as many laws as possible. Just as the antis for years carefully crafted harmless sounding legislation to affect as many firearms as possible. Remember the "cop killer" bullet law? Designed to protect poor innocent police officers (and who doesn't want to do that?) It would have banned nearly ALL centerfire rifle ammunition. Oops, a mistake? Of course not.

Now the tables are reversed and Mr Big Dog does not like it. But that is too bad for Mr Big Dog. The debate is over, "settled law" means something. I am done with the debate and working to eliminate injustices.

California will be changed. So will Illinois. Just as stubborn Georga and Mississippi and Alabama were with their racist laws, so will California and Illinois and Hawaii and New Jersey be changed from their laws violating civil rights. We are down to SIX states. How hard will that be?

That's not exactly true. There were actually more homicides in FL in 2006 than there were in 2005 (when stand your ground passed). And yet more in 2007 than in 2006. Then we saw slight decreases the following three years but the number of homicides in 2010 was still higher than that in 2005.

THIS is why societies that are armed are safe.

That's laughable. I can tell you from personal experience that less armed societies are safer than more armed societies. The intentional homicide rate in the US is more than five times that of Germany, for example. It's about 10 times that of Austria, roughly 4 times that of the UK or Australia. And so on, and so forth. More arms in more hands do NOT make a society safe and do NOT curb crime.
