Investors flee Carbonite after Limbaugh announcement

On Saturday, Carbonite CEO David Friend released a statement on his company’s website declaring that Carbonite had decided to “withdraw” advertising from Rush Limbaugh’s radio show in the wake of his controversial remarks involving Georgetown Law student Sandra Fluke because it will “ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse”:

Even though Mr. Limbaugh has now issued an apology, we have nonetheless decided to withdraw our advertising from his show. We hope that our action, along with the other advertisers who have already withdrawn their ads, will ultimately contribute to a more civilized public discourse.

However, it hasn’t done much to contribute to his company’s stock price. Since the market opened on Monday through its close today, Carbonite stock (NASDAQ:CARB) has plummeted nearly 12 percent, outpacing the drop of the NASDAQ index in that same time period by nine-and-a-half points. It was also one of the biggest decliners on the NASDAQ on Tuesday.

Advertisers continued abandoning Mr. Limbaugh’s program in droves today, including companies who had sponsored it for years, like the online dating site NaziMingle.com™.

The only good news for Mr. Limbaugh today came from GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who offered this muted statement of support: “Look, I wouldn’t have chosen the words he did. But it’s not like he called her a poor person or something.”

Don't understand due to his words and popularity, the distaste of Rush to Democrats or liberals when they help to project him to the pinnacle that his is now. If you don't like him and what he says, ignore him.

Rush will be just fine. He will recover any sponsors easily. The man has one of the highest rated show in history and still commands top ratings. Few companies that can afford the sponsorship bucks Rush's show commands wouldn't hesitate to get that endorsement.

This is all political posturing and attempting to gain. Despite the controversy Rush's ratings jumped through the roof. If Carbonite does not want to do business with 20 million + listeners in more than 600 radio station markets, someone else will. Imagine that. It isn't like his show is a liberal newspaper that people will do without and he cannot be replaced by Craigs List.

Anyone that thinks Rush Limbaugh is Don Imus is in for a rude awakening. In a week or two this will all be gone, Rush will have made a few more million $$$ out of it, Carbonite will be losing money and investors and will make a decision that Rush has "apologized enough" and come back with their advertising.

In fact after tonight, Super Tuesday, this is old news.

And we know this how? Arbitron radio ratings for this week (and ratings are only published on a weekly basis) for major radio markets won't be available until Mar 26.

Oh he will have the ratings and viewership still. Sponsors have been waiting in line to get the slots that just opened up. He will demand a bit more to squeeze them in and they will pay it gladly. Rush has a huge audience.
