I'm having trouble finding the answer and I see conflicting info, including conflicting with what's on ssa.gov. My fiancee gets on the plane in 2 days to fly here. I plan to get her the SSN right away (working with it is not important at this time). I am planning on us bringing these to the office:

- Her passport with K1 visa in it.

- The I-94 form.

- Her birth certificate.

- A filled out SS-5 form.

Is this enough?

Are they going to take the birth certificate? She only has 1 certified copy of it.

How long does it normally take? We are moving shortly after her arrival and don't want anything mailed to the old address accidentally.

Also, after getting married, we have to return to get her name changed on it? What is needed for that, a certified marriage certificate? (And do they take this?)

Speaking of moving, how do we change the address with any government office(s) that need to know about the new address of a newly arrived K1 visa holder?

Thanks.

Is this enough? - requirements above is enough..

Are they going to take the birth certificate? She only has 1 certified copy of it. - i don't think they'll ask for it.. anyway just bring it to be safe.. And in my experience, the SS personnel will photocopy all you original documents then they'll return it to you..

How long does it normally take? We are moving shortly after her arrival and don't want anything mailed to the old address accidentally. - it takes 2-4 weeks before it arrive.

Also, after getting married, we have to return to get her name changed on it? What is needed for that, a certified marriage certificate? (And do they take this?) - what i did yesterday, was i return to their office presented my certified marriage license, again they will photocopy it and return the original to you. They also asked for my passport & I-94 form.

Speaking of moving, how do we change the address with any government office(s) that need to know about the new address of a newly arrived K1 visa holder? - We also move after the marriage, since i came to SS office yesterday i told them that i change address, so they just asked for the new address then update on their system.. But someone told me, you can do the change of address online.

Thanks.

By the way i read on the forum that you should wait atleast 2 weeks before applying for SS#, so the info of your fiancee will be surely on the system.

Goodluck & Godbless..

So it sounds like maybe we should move first then get SSN? She will only be at the initial address for 3 weeks, and the 2 weeks you recommend waiting plus 2-4 more weeks for the card make it well past move date.

Or, maybe we should just do that after getting married? I'm not 100% sure if we can get married w/o the SSN though (some say yes, others say no).

Sorry, my change of address question was mainly about USCIS, not about SSA. What form do we fill out, etc. to make sure immigration knows where she is?

Thanks.

Here's VJ ''How to get a SSN'' guide: http://www.visajourney.com/content/ssn

You can get married without a SSN, it depends on the state where you are getting married. Call your County Clerk office.

Social Security does not keep the birth certificate but you need a English version to show them. They will make a copy. If you want to make sure, bring yourself a photocopy. You could make arrangements with USPS so your mail is delivered to your new address or apply for SSN after you move. You can apply as late as 14 days before her I-94 expires (it will be valid for 90 days). If you miss that deadline, you need to wait for her to receive her GC to apply.

When you file for AOS you can file with your new address. It gets harder if you move while your AOS is pending.

US citizen since April 2016

ROC completed April 2014

AOS from K1 completed February 2012
