Hearing Different Things..

My boyfriend and I are getting married at Home Affairs in Cape Town on March 26th. I was under the impression that we need to submit a COMPUTER GENERATED UNABRIDGED MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE, which takes up to 6 weeks to get. That's what is says on the USCIS website and the Checklist.

An abridged Marriage Certificate we get the day of the wedding. Now someone at the USCIS in Joburg is saying that we don't need to submit the unabridged certificate, we can submit the regular marriage certificate?! So what is true? This is the first time I am hearing this. Why can't anyone get their story straight?

Also once the I-130 is submitted, do I need to stay in South Africa? I really need to get back to the US as I am not working here and can't. Again the website says I must stay here until the petition is approved but the office says I don't have to...

Anyone been through this and knows for sure?

You submit the certified copy (stamped by the registrar etc).

Of course you can return to the US. Put your US address on the petition form.

For the I-130 you can use the abridged marriage certificate that you get on the day you get married. Later on in the process, you WILL need the unabridged one. We went through this process in Johannesburg a few months ago so I remember how it went. You should apply for the unabridged certificate as soon as possible as it takes approximately 6 weeks to issue (sometimes longer) and ours was issued with an error that they said would take another 6 weeks to correct.

You will be able to travel to the US during the process so don't worry about that.

Good luck!

Exactly that's what I thought we would do...We are also requesting my boyfriend's unabridged birth certificate NOW because these things take time...
