Bremerton School Shooting: 9-Year-Old Boy Tells Court, 'I'm Sorry'

The 9-year-old boy who took a handgun to school that accidentally discharged, seriously injuring a third grade classmate, told a Washington court, "I'm sorry," after pleading guilty to three criminal charges, the Seattle Times reports.

The third-grader, who attended the Armin Jahr Elementary School in Bremerton, pleaded guilty to possession of a gun, bringing a dangerous weapon to school, and reckless endangerment.

The paper reports that under a plea agreement, the boy will be required to complete 48 hours of community service, before serving 12 months of probation.

On Feb. 22, the child carried a .45 caliber handgun to school in his backpack, according to police, the Associated Press reports.

The gun accidentally fired after the boy slammed the backpack down. Amina Kocer-Bowman, an 8-year-old classmate, was shot. She remains in serious condition after five surgeries, and is now on a ventilator to help her breathe, according to HeraldNet.

I believe most of the charges are being dropped and instead the mother will be charged.

This goes to further prove me correct on my theory that this country is producing more and more idiots by the day. I mean seriously the parents should be jailed for being tards and not teaching their children about gun safety. We knew that sh*t by the time we were 4 and 5 years old when I was growing up.

Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Right, we knew darn well not to touch the rifles/shotguns until we were headed out the door to go hunting or fishing.

We would have been literally beaten senseless if we took a gun out of the case without permission. Me and my brothers were started out hunting quail with .22's by the time we were in Kindergarten and we learned gun safety well before that. Back then though you could beat your kids, and having a stupid kid wasn't a good thing like it is today. They have medical names for these kids today and the parents make excuses for their kids screw ups.

Crappy parenting makes for stupid kids.

The kid came from a broken family and his father wasn't in the picture.

When we grew up, "stupid kids" were not prevalent -- there was always a stick, a wooden spoon or a plum tree switch available to beat some sense back into your body. I know what you mean, I can remember being in the 6th grade when I got my first squirrel with a 20 ga.

Another example one of those things the government got involved in and screwed it up all to hell, parenting -- now look at the little heathens society has to deal with. Family counseling and therapy have replaced the ole fashion trip to the wood shed.

"Me and my brothers were started out hunting quail with .22's"

Must be a good shot...

I actually grew up hunting quail with a double barrel 16 gauge. Full choke on the left side and modified on the right, I still couldn't hit much. (good thing I never hit the dogs. But I enjoyed every minute of it!!!

My two children knew we had guns in the house...and they knew the pistols were loaded. I always warned them to never touch our firearms. I promised them that anytime they wanted to hold the firearms, I would let them, but they had to ask me first. Every time they every asked, I complied. I would unload and/or ensure the gun was unloaded, then allow them to hold it.

When they were old enough, we started shooting and hunting together. Even my daughter has spent many early mornings in a tree stand!

If you cure a child's curiosity about firearms, and teach them to respect them, they will typically never accidentally hurt themselves or anyone else....just saying, you know.

That's it. Just grew up with weapons and couldn't imagine a world back then that didn't have weapons. It was the norm. As I grew up and became an adult I started hearing about gun control. It concerns me. Why shouldn't it? If anyone doesn't want a weapon around then don't. To tell me or anyone I know that we can't have weapons at all is scary.

Correct! Studies have been done on the very issue you bring up -- those kids that are trained and guided by a parent or both about safety, which removes the curiosity factor and mystery about the weapon from the child are less likely to be involved in a accident involving firearms.

Quail, at least the ones in Western Washington just run around between the sticker bushes and the saw grass. It's almost impossible to miss. Head shots ftw.

Or just to go practice. The B.B. guns were for tromping around the woods around the house.kicking.gif

The Ole' Daisy B.B. gun was the starting point for many boys, then you graduated up to the pellet gun as you got older.

There was a time when we were playing baseball in the front yard, I was probably 13 or 14, and a few of the younger kids came over. One was very young about 4 or so and bit messed up. He would brag that he had sex with his girlfriend etc. Anyway, we weren't paying attention close attention to him and he randomly wandered into my house....where he proceeded to the back room, where he opened a drawer and retrieved a pistol. He accidently shot himself in the head.

Just kidding. My mom had a rule about keeping ammo separate from firearms. So instead he was just waving it around going bang bang. Needless to say he scared the ####### out of my friend who assumed it might be loaded (rightly so).

I was about to ask you who cleaned up the mess? Then I realized you were joking.
