Received 10-year Green Card instead of 2-year Green Card

As for the Green Card, I second other advice on here. You, not the USCIS, are responsible to keep yourself in status. Ignorance of the law does not constitute a lack of responsibility to follow the law. I'd get the job, get the green card on file with your employer, and then make an InfoPass appointment, as others have suggested.

Now, for a bit of snarkiness.

I love the "I didn't get a piece of paper so I want X fees back" mentality that I see almost every single day.

"The judge denied my complaint. Can I have my filing fee back?"

"I withdrew my motion. Can I have the fees back?"

"My case was settled before (XYZ manditory program) I was supposed to attend took place. Do I still have to go? Can I get my money back?"

and my favorite:

"I filed such and such with the court, but didn't do anything on it for 6 months because you didn't tell me to. Now the judge has dismissed my case and there's a fee to reopen it. Can I have my original fee applied to the re-opening fee and get the rest of my money back?"

I sometimes think people forget that you're not paying $180 or $325 for a piece of paper -- though that's the only physical proof of it. You're paying for salaries, for buildings, for the supplies your/mine/our RFEs and welcome letters are printed on, the computers being used, the toner, the chairs, the desks -- there's a lot your money pays for, though you may not see the end result.

Just because you didn't get your EAD, for example, doesn't mean someone didn't have to work on your case -- they did, whether it feels like it or not. Just because you didn't get your AP doesn't mean it didn't cost the USCIS anything.

//end poor government drone's rant.

Thanks a lot for the input!

Well, I guess I will have to apply to lift conditions in two years. I just don't know if I should turn in my 10-year GC and try to get the 2-year GC. My status remains the same regardless of a erroneous GC, right? I really don't want to go through the ordeal of exchanging cards and risking to wait forever for a new GC: I frequently need to travel abroad to see my parents who have health problems... without GC or AP I cannot leave the country!

I am so annoyed with USCIS! Why can't they just do their job? That's what I pay for!

Yodrak - a point of clarification:

Should it be an I-90 the OP files for an erroneous GC, rahter than an I-94?

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.
