Hello,

My fiancee is a Thai national and she has borrowed money to pay for her education and to help her family. She was talking to friends and was told that the Thai government (Provincial Health Office) will not let her leave the country if she has a debt because of the fear she will not repay it. She works in a hospital for dental health.

Is this true? Does anybody have a similar situation? If yes, are there any avenues other than paying the debt that will allow her to come to the USA?

My wife has a student loan from University... never came up when she left Thailand. Unless the debt was to a government agency, I don't see how they could do anything to stop her.

There are some countries where defaulting on a loan is a criminal offense and you could be tagged and arrested at the airport if you were trying to leave (or enter). Because of your fiancee's statement I assume Thailand must be one of them. However if your fiancee is current on her payments I imagine it wouldn't be a problem. I would just double check the laws regarding personal loans in the country as well as the terms of her loan agreement and then make sure she keeps up on payments while in the US if she plans on going back to Thailand.
