I have a question regarding the VIP service in Odessa. I will be travelling to Odessa in August to get married to my long time fiancée and want to know if it better to use the VIP service this time. Last time i came to Ukraine i didn't know what the service was all about so i didn't use it. I also didn't have anything valuable on my either. This time i am bringing 2 wedding rings. I didn't have to buy my ring because it was handed down to my from my grandmother, but my fiancée's ring i bought for 200 Euro which is within the limit of (gifts). Does the VIP service help in getting through customs with less issues. The last thing i want to do is pay another TAX on something i have already paid for.

just a though put the ring in your shaving kit and bring through or on a chain around your neck who will know?

That's exactly what I did.... I had it in my carry on bag, nobody looked.

Robert,

Don't know if this helps, but the first time I went to Ukraine, I indeed use the VIP service but it did backfire on me as far as customs goes. I was taken to a separate building from the airport where I stood there for about almost 1 hour before a customs agent showed up (I guess I looked like a drug smuggler or something..LOL). He was in a bad mood so he made me take everything out of my suit case and I got "drilled". I did have a piece of jewelry with me and the only question asked about it was how much I paid for it. Once I showed the receipt, they let me go. Nice thing about it though was that right after customs, they gave me a bag of goodies with some chocolate and brandy as a welcome.

After the 1st trip, I went to Ukraine 8 more times and I never took the VIP service again, instead, I went through the "Nothing to Declare" line and never had problems with it. I have always gone through customs faster than the 1st time and always have had in my suit case, more than customs limits are. I have never been stopped nor had to pay taxes on it, never had to bribe anybody either. Now, that was back between 2006/2009.

 Just pack it in your carryon somewhere and go. This does not have to be so dramatic. I have brought many computers, and several other suitcases full of "stuff" I ended up "forgetting" to bring home. Oops. It happens. I never used the VIP service, save the $40 or whatever. I do not recall ever being asked a question at all going in and out of Ukraine.

I used to bring gifts like CD players, make-up, some jewelry etc. Went through the normal line with my little declaration form in hand (3 times) and if it looks expensive, don't try and pass it off as cubic zirconia - declare it and as long as it's under the limit, no problem. I would pack the CD packages I carefully opened w/ a knife in a separate suitcase or carry-on and then re-package them on the other side as gifts. Same with money, if it's under the insoles of your shoes, likely it won't be seen, but it might. Problem is if you get caught or look fishy, then it adds time and possibly money. They know everyone brings things in, but if you think you can bring in oodles of items and get away with it, you are rolling the dice.
