My husband is American and I am Canadian. We are looking for something that we can get in both of our names as "joint documentation". Short story: We have asked for help on here before, and were given the list of banks, credit cards, home/bills, car/insurance etc but we live in Alabama where the immigration law has just passed, so we're finding it extremely hard to do anything without a SSN. We currently live with his father, so adding my name to any home related things are not an option. I can not be put on his car title because I can not get car insurance without an Alabama driver's permit in which I can not get without a SSN. I can not be added to his work insurance (although we are legally married) until I have a green card. I can not be added to his credit card, or bank account without having a SSN. Bascially anything that we apply for, we are denied because the lack of SSN. So, we are only relying on notarized affidavits that we do live together. But we do not feel comfortable with just that so we're once again asking for any ideas... really. Anything at all possible we can use?!

Do you rent/lease an apartment/condo/home? If so your name should be on the lease for that.

I find it odd that there is no bank that will allow you on the account without a SSN...I know several have policies that allow it with a passport...Chase didn't even require that for me.

OP said she lives with her father-in law. Maybe have him draw up a 'rental' agreement with both your names. You can find templates online pretty easy.

She's in Alabama, every bank has to follow that stupid law that was passed.

What Visa did you come to the US on? K-1, K-3 CR-1 or are you adjusting status while in the US? You don't have any of your info filled out on your time line. That can help people answer your questions better.

After AOS K-1, K-3 you get a SSN. CR-1 automatically get a green card and SSN. Most officers realize you're just starting out your life and it's hard to have joint anything until you're settled.

Ok after doing some digging I see you're adjusting status while in the US.

Once your AOS is done you will have an SSN. Since you don't have one and the law in Alabama does not allow you to get anything in your name with out a valid SSN and green card, don't sweat the small stuff.

Have your father in-law write up a rental agreement with both your names, get your affidavits and use other proof of a relationship than joint documents.

There must be a few things that can still be done. I think you should still be able to add an authorized user on a credit card. Try other things such as family gym memberships. Do you have any mail that you receive at your address?

If you can't get stuff then you can't get stuff. You have a valid reason. You will have an interview so they will get a chance to talk to you. Getting one rather silly thing "joint" won't really make much of a difference. You can also send photos and other secondary evidence. Can't pull a rabbit out of thin air.

My husband has a Southwest Airlines credit card and I was added to that without having a SSN. He lives in MD but applied at the airport and added me without any issue.

Just a thought...

Here is a link to a fact sheet from SSA for noncitizens Social Security Numbers For Noncitizens. It may be helpful to you. I think you may be able to get an SSN as a noncitizen and have your status changed after your receive your AOS.

Good luck!
