Kip you said you lived next to the Puyallup Reservation so I assume you are aware that the Medicine Creak Treaty set the size of the Reservation at 18,000 acres. How big is it now?

No idea. But I did go to school with Lisa and Ty Satiacum at Fife high school and I remember when their dad (Bob Satiacum) tried to have Romana Bennett killed by hiring a hit man and he put three bullets through her windshield on Pacific Highway. And I know that the Puyallups got a sh*t load of Tacoma tide flat land and they are the only tribe in Washington State to have their own super cranes. Now figure in all the smoke shops, bingo halls, and Emerald Queen Casino and they are sitting pretty.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

What culture? The White Man took away their livelihoods, their dreams, stripped them of their culture and of hope. The native kids learn what? They are exposed to garbage at a young age and see nothing that makes think that there is a world of opportunity outside. They live in sh*tholes where they have no concept of what the rest of us take for granted: go to school, maybe college and get a job. Choice requires volition, if you don't know, how can you choose. I'm sorry that your upbringing was #######, honestly, I grew up in a Middle-Class household, I didn't have to but I've been busting my azz working since I was a kid. I'd love to see the list of freebies and the quality of those services that Natives receive.

Why is it always the white man?

Every history course, every trip to a museum.... every conversation about minorities always includes the part where they built this country too.

they fought our wars, they also ran businesses and settled the land before and after the Civil war they were quietly influencing every step of the way..... yet when ever it's something negative.... we suddenly turn monolithic in our memory of history.

Can't have it both ways.

Anyway, every single thing you blame Whitey for the Indian did to other tribes.... except the monthly cash payout part, we seem to be the only ones doing that.

Has anyone in Africa taken blame for the industry of selling fellow Africans?

Have the Arabs come south and ask for forgiveness for their huge african slave trade, do they convert their oil money into "reparations" for the enslavement of countless thousands of Black slaves?

Where else in the world do we find this urge to pay people alive today for things done to people who lived hundreds of years before.... by people who lived hundreds of years ago?

Dopey White people, they are being played and..... they like it!

Here's a fact. The Indians in Washington were slaved by the Canadian (Haida tribe) and Alaska (Tlinkat tribe) Indians. When they wanted slaves they would canoe down to Puget Sound and fill up on slaves. Same with the Indians in Eastern Washington...they were at war with the Montana and Idaho indians on a constant basis. Rape, pillage, and plunder was the name of the game back then.

Why is it taken as a bad thing by the right-wingers that we try (not always successfully) to live by a higher moral standard of behavior than some of our forefathers and other cultures. Just because others do it does not make it right! It seems some on here never learned these basic lessons from kindergarten!

All one need do is look at the time line for the abolition of Slavery in different parts of the world, White folk were nearly alone in doing away with the practice.

No one did more than Briton.

Wait a minute, I just posted the time line showing how "our forefathers" and the countries they came from where ahead of almost every other part of the world and you come back claiming we should have a higher moral standard than they did.

You hold them to a standard you dare not apply to others. Though they were revolutionaries in bringing liberty and rights to all people, it's just wasn't fast enough (though faster than everyone else.)

This is the poison we raise we implant into school children with no context of history.

So upside down is the logic that we institutionally discriminate against whites because someone who shared their skin tone two hundred years ago benefited from slavery or merely lived in that era..... and who also benefits from this discrimination?

People coming here from other countries in which their kinsman also benefited from slavery..... and waited a lot longer to abolish the practice than we did.

Did you ever figure it out? 18,000 acres solemnly set aside forever by Treaty, reduced to just 22 acres. That is really a fantastic freebie for the Puyallup Tribe! Usually the Feds checkerboarded Reservation in half. Point being there is another side to the story.

You miss the point. I am not being critical of our forefathers or saying things did not happen fast enough. The speed at which desirable social changes and progress can occur is necessarily limited by people and cultures with entrenched customs and moral codes. I am proud of my country and western culture for the remarkable degree of progress that is apparent over the last two centuries! In my lifetime I have seen dramatic progress in racial tolerance and now we are seeing the same progress in acceptance for non-heterosexuals. But we do not honor those who pushed ahead in the past to get us to where we are today by deciding that we have come far enough and should stop now. It is important to realize that we can do even better. Is everything being pushed for the right way to go? Undoubtedly not! That is why it is so important to have a free and vigorous dialogue and to try to keep an open mind. The world is, in most ways, a better place now than in the past but there is no reason it cannot be even better for future generations.
