What's the dealio ?

the dealio is that my husband doesn't need an ITIN since we're doing the MFS, i don't want his income taxed twice and i don't need the extra hassle of an ITIN number delaying anything. MFS is simple, easy and makes sense for our situation. we have never lived together, he does not financially support me, therefore his income should not go into my filing, just yet. once hes here with a SSN, we will file jointly :-) i hate taxes :-)

Well, for future reference, even though you would have to tell the IRS what is income is in order to file jointly, you would also get to exclude everything under about $95,000 from taxation because he doesn't reside in the US and his money doesn't come from here. So you would get the married filing jointly exemption (almost $20000) without paying taxes on his income (or at least without paying taxes on the first $95,000 of his income). But yes, all that takes more paperwork.

thanks alizon, i actually had no idea, but at this point i'm spent to the point that i would pay 95,000 if i could just to put this process behind me. i'm exhausted and just want at least this part behind me. but thank you so much for sharing

OMG!!! Just when i thought this crappy day couldn't get any worse, i open my mail to ANOTHER checklist. I almost fainted barely reading it and not understanding. Called NVC just to be relieved that its a standard checklist they send when the AOS IS APROVED!!! and IV package isn't in the system yet, which it will be tomorrow in the AM!!!!

One step closer. WOOOHOOO!

Yeah, when NVC reviews packages, they frequently issue a checklist for the other package, whether it's in the building or not.

Keep in mind, even though it might be a month to get the date assigned, the interview can take place like just 2 weeks later or something.

Anyone with some idea know if the wait time for the interview is on NVC or if its the consulate to which your interview is being scheduled at?

As far as I know: each month, the consulate/embassy sends NVC a schedule of available slots. Then NVC schedules accordingly. Remember, NVC has to deal with a varying amount of cases each day (still in the thousands though), so the time it takes to schedule an interview will always fluctuate.

That's a good question... I guess depending on the answer, it might mean that interview dates are scheduled faster for some consulates. When I said I'd spoken to one person with a 6+ week wait and another person with a 24 hour wait, though, they were both London consulate interviews, so it looks like there can be plenty of variation at the same consulate.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know what the odds are on calling the consulate and rescheduling your interview for a sooner date? Like volunteering to be on standby in the event that an interview is cancelled?

There's always a chance at getting an earlier interview. If someone cancels right before you contact them, then a slot is open and it's possible you can get it. Not sure if there's a standby list, but it's worth a shot!
