Yes, anything not in English needs to be translated into English.

No, the DOS website says that anything not in English OR IN THE LANGUAGE OF THE COUNTRY WHERE THE INTERVIEW WILL TAKE PLACE must be translated.

Some countries require translations inspite of DOS statement but that's country specific. I didn't translate my civil documents and they were accepted.

So you should check if Germany requests translation, but I really doubt it.

Saylin, HELP!

I got all my paperwork for DS 23 ready and I was wondering does it have to be translated into english?? Birth Certificated, and the Police Report?

Thanks!

Yes, anything not in English needs to be translated into English.

Correct, all originals plus original translations. Marriage certificate is a master piece. No need to translate your passport bio data page though (assuming that your name is written in Latin letters, based on your country of origin).

Careful guys... there's a difference between a recommendation and something you MUST do. The DOS website states (as Saylin quotes within the first 2 posts) that translations are NOT required necessarily. Either English or the official language where the consulate is (where the interview will take place). I also called 2 different NVC operators to confirm that translations are NOT required. There's nothing wrong with getting/submitting a translation, but its not required. Just sayin...

Congrats 1st.....No, call back and get the IIN# and try to login with both your Case# and your IIN#. When you call back ask for "Invoice Identification Number" don't try to abbreviate ; some reps (most of them) have no clue what a IIN# is. this way you will know when to expect AOS invoice when you see the error message" your case has been terminated". Get ready, this part will go fast.

I did ask for the Invoice Identification Number by name, not the abbreviation. I was told that since the case was entered last night it wouldn't be available right away. The operator said I would receive that number in an email, but I plan to call later today to see if I can get it sooner.

I sent the Choice of Agent email using the template provided on the NVC shortcut. I figured I don't need the IIN# for that and since they are taking a week to respond to those I wanted to get it out as soon as possible.

sheeshkabelle is correct, Anything that's not English SHOULD be translated. keep in mind that NVC specialists has to confirm that you have all paper work that are required and before completing the case (regardless of submission to the Embassy). When Saylin wrote the guide she wrote it for all nations (including UK, Ireland (non drunk part :} ),Canada...etc - mainly English language). However, an applicant should read their country requirement in order to make a decision of translate or not translate. the answers given in VJ forums are the safest through all situations to minimize any chance of a checklist, doesn't mean a member should not read the country where they are interviewing in. If you ask me? I will tell you to translate any non English doc, for a simple reason is that my country's portal Required any non-French or non-English document should be translated.

Let me ask you this? If you receive a checklist about translating your paper work, would you be able to blame the 2 NVC reps that you confirmed with?

In the travel.state.gov site it only says:

Translation Requirements

All documents not in English, or in the official language of the country in which application for a visa is being made, must be accompanied by certified translations. So if you're in Spain and your birth certificate is in Spanish, no translation needed!!! Confirmed with NVC

wow, hard to believe, but i just called NVC and the lady pretty much barked back at me that NO TRANSLATIONS ARE NEEDED. Only the original documents??? Could this really be true??

If you really want to take the risk of sending UN-Translated paperwork by all means go for it. We translated EVERYTHING just in case. What may cost now a few extra $$ to translate is worth more than having the whole process being delayed because we tried to not go the extra-mile to facilitate the papers to be translated into English.

You're missing my point, read Wolffsrain post.
