Mr. Romney’s Florida trip might have seemed like an odd, if confident, detour from states that will be voting on Tuesday. But Michigan has an ample share of Nascar fans. And the campaign hoped that images of Mr. Romney at the speedway would circulate widely through the Southern states that vote on March 6.

But the crowd initially booed Mr. Romney, who occasionally struck a discordant note, as when he approached a group of fans wearing plastic ponchos. “I like those fancy raincoats you bought,” he said. “Really sprung for the big bucks.”

We shall see Mitt wearing a poncho before long. It's his favorite outfit as he will surely explain. He likes trees that have the right hight and dead grass in Michigan, too. He likes all kinds of things. Just gotta tell him what it is that you want him to like and he will like it. That's Mitt.

"I was at a NASCAR, a uh, stock car, uh - a race - an automobile race, and uh, I had on this poncho. It was a cheap, plastic poncho but it was the same, uh, poncho, at the race, the uh, car race, stock NASCAR car race, that uh, all the other people, the uh, fine American fans of racing, they were wearing the same type poncho I was. We all had on these cheap plastic ponchos. And let me tell you a thing about ponchos. When I was running a steel mill in Indiana, there was a plastic factory next door. And sometimes when it rained, they would, uh, because I'm sure they're fans of the car stock racing, they would uh, it's important to remember I've actually ran a business, they would give us these cheap plastic ponchos - made in America!"
