I live in a "city" called Morganton, North Carolina. I'm an hour and a half west of Charlotte, and an hour east of Asheville. The "International Foods" aisle in the grocery stores consists of Taco Bell taco kits, and some Mexican tortillas and cookies, that's about it. There's no bakery in town, other than an independent donut shop that just opened a couple of months ago. So nowhere to get HFCS free fresh breads or pastries. There's no butcher in town. As mentioned, the Greek restaurant doesn't serve real Greek food, its dummed down for the delicate Morganton palet. There's a bunch of Mexican restaurants, and some Chinese-like restaurants.

I used to live in Toronto, one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world, where I could get authentic food from just about anywhere in the world just a short walk or bus ride away, and I miss it. Here is no where near multi-cultural, tho they like to tout that they are, because there's 5 asian families, a couple of Pakistani and Indian families, some blacks and a few "others". 95% population white-bread, 5% other. And the Mexicans all keep to themselves, as do the Blacks, and the Asians and the Pakistanis and the Indians etc etc etc...It actually makes me quite uncomfortable the barely veiled segregation and bigotry.

Also, if you're someone who has food sensitivities, like I am, then its difficult to eat here. EVERYTHING is full of high fructose corn syrup, and this ####### wreaks havoc on the body I'm quite certain of it. I stopped, entirely, eating or drinking foods with it, and I almost immediately lost 10 of the 15 pounds I gained since moving here. I'm sure America would slim down considerably if the FDA/USDA would outlaw this sweetener.

I'm stuck in small town bible belt, where quite a lot of people have never been to the next state over, let alone even know where Canada is. Its quite maddening.

I have to go with Poutine too. mmmmmm. My husband is in New Orleans, they drink alot of Bloody Marys. I have introduced the Ceasar. They do have Clamato juice there and I also found Beefmato made by Motts which is really good too. But in New Orleans, I get to enjoy the crawfish and crab boils. I'll trade that for poutine and ketchup chips anyday.

You know, having had lived in Canada for a good part of my life, I don't think I have ever even tried poutine or whever the hell it is. I have seen it a few times at the New York Fries in the mall food court, but that's about the only time I think I've even seen it where I grew up. For some reason it just looks nasty...

I believe poutine is more of a Quebed east coast thing. I know when I was with the Air Force, the cp-140 pilots used to do tarining flight to Quebec, and they would take a list of who wanted the cheese curds, lol

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

well it started in Quebec, but its made its way right across the country. I think even McDonalds in some areas has poutine now.

And, a friend who came to visit TO from Australia a lot of years ago had poutine from New York Fries, and then a year or so later said that NYF had opened in her town in Oz and she took her friends out for poutine.

My hubby however had not even considered putting gravy on fries before he met me, let alone cheese curds. He will suffer poutine tho if I make it ;)

My wife steals my fries when I put gravey on them at restraunts. Though she likes the chicken gravy and I like just the plain brown gravey on my fries. I don't think she'd ever thought about the gravy on fries thing either until she saw me do it one day.

Where the hell did that idea/tradition ever come from I wonder?

I don't know for sure, but it's not too far a leap from mashed potatoes and gravy to fried potatoes and gravy.

I have to say, there are a few foods that my Canadian fiance has got me hooked on that, of course, I cannot get in the town I live in. Love donairs, ketchup and all dressed chips (Old Dutch brand prefereable), Kinder Eggs (although I did see them in a store when I visited family in New Haven, CT), wine gums. My fiance likes Nanaimo bars and could not believe that I had never heard of them. I have made many junk food runs into Quebec province ( I am only a couple hours from the border). Unfortunately, can't find Old Dutch brand chips, but have got him other chips and Nanaimo bars.

Loblaws - I already am missing Loblaws. Wegmans is a wonderful alternative but there are none around where we are.

I miss the sheer pleasure of wandering through a clean, fully stocked, choice filled grocery store.
