Texas-300x300.jpg

Texas is big, proud and … not really liked that much by people in other states, at least according to the results of a Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday.

The state of Texas is many things, but when 1,200 Americans were asked for their opinion of Texas in the last several months, 31 percent responded unfavorably. The good news is that 40 percent responded favorably, but the difference in percentages wasn't enough for the state to be viewed more positively than Hawaii. Or North Dakota. Or Rhode Island.

You get the idea.

The 9 percentage point difference in positive and negative opinions placed Texas at 38th most liked state among the 50 United States.

But however Texas is viewed, residents can take comfort in knowing Americans aren't indifferent about its Lone Star. About forty to sixty percent of respondents answered "not sure" when asked about their opinions of most states. But only 29 percent were unsure whether they liked Texas or not – a credit to Texas's distinct culture and style, said Mark P. Jones, chair of the Department of Political Science at Rice University.

"States like Texas, given that it's a well known brand and elicits a lot of positive support, it also has high negatives," Jones said.

The only state respondents had less of an opinion about was California with 28 percent – the most hated state on the list.

Some more findings from the survey: If you are black, you probably don't like Texas as much as most other states, but it's better than Mississippi or Alabama. If you are a Republican, you probably love Texas and hate California. (The reverse is true if you are a Democrat.)

Take heart, Texas – 25 million people can't be wrong. You will always be the biggest (as long as you're only counting the continental states because Alaska beats you by a lot.) You have a lot of oil and presidents and a really big water park. And people like you more than New Jersey.

Texas is a weird state, El Paso is nothing like the rest of it. I like Texas, even if I don't always agree with the politics. Miss the Oilers, though. crying.gifcrying.gifcrying.gif

Well El Paso is closer to Los Angeles than Houston so that may be why. I don't agree with the politics myself and I live here. Miss the Luv Ya blue myself. Their death was sorrowful.star_smile.gif

(I think you miss the Oilers only because their Luv Ya blue song was a remake of an old Beatles tune.)

Texas is great, but I agree that it can also be a bit weird. For example, everything is hunkydory if you're living round the Big D...but, I later lived in Amarillo (West Texas) and alot of Texans didn't even consider West Texas to be part of 'real Texas'.

Also...I really got tired of all the drug store cowboy when I grew up there. When I left in 1996, I swore I'd never go back. However, in some aspects, Texas seems to have improved since then. I had a consulting gig in Big D this summer and was really impressed...it wasn't nearly as 'drugstorecowboyie' as before and seemed much more 'normal'. Plus, Forth Worth has been totally rebuilt and is awesome now. In fact, now that I've been out of TX for 16 years, I honestly wouldn't mind moving back...even if it doesn't have rain or trees...

I think alot of people outside of Texas, who participated in this poll, might not like Texas simply because they saw what an idiot Rick Perry is during the GOP debates ...

El Paso, is that Texas? I thought it was part of California.

No problem if people don't like Texas, when too many people like a state, they move there and ruin the place

Look at California now, too many people moved there and wrecked the joint.

Fort Bliss is on another planet and the rest of the El Paso area is like that. Half the time, you weren't sure if you were in the US, wall-to-wall Luftwaffe and NATO personnel and the locals, it was a nice place, though.

Nice blast from the past. Bud Adams is Nashville's problem. He seems to be liked there a lot more than here.

I consider it all part of Texas but know that west Texas and El Paso are different. Anyplace along the border is part of Mexico really. I also remember the drugstore cowboy craze. Glad that ####### is gone. Well the rodeo Houston is starting so a few weeks everyone is a cowboy. I will be going also to see ZZ Top play.

They decided Fort Worth was worth saving and have been spending a ton of money that way. I have a lot of trees all near Huntsville. Started to put it up for sell. Since I got married I am stuck on the coast it seems.

For sure. We are getting a lot of people moving here. The politicians are happy as can be but us regular folk are grumbling. Never understood the happiness that the States love about growing the population. Just means more people are having to share in the awesomeness.

People are really nice and just love going there. It is a shame that we can't really cross the border there anymore. Spent many a day over drinking modelos and smoking a cuban. Beautiful.

Thanks. She is beautiful and know I am lucky. I did try to explain to her the importance of the Alamo but doubt she cared. She had found the mall nearby. She loves shopping.....
