Exactly. This is the radar you must learn to trust. This is how to tell that are being manipulated. You learn to recognize how it feels.

Because you are the Giraffe sticking out of the crowd to these kinds of predators. Think about being a purse snatcher for a moment. Who does he target? They target what criminologists call the "victim stance". Your predator is a little different, but ask the same thing: who is he looking for?

Someone who has their radar turned off. They're so good at this they can size you up in not much more than a glance. But they'll have a quick set of tests they'll run you through to see if you are one of "us".

They have no conscience. People are objects to attain ends, so they can lay long-range plans and ruthlessly carry them about. They are also masters at keeping people apart so that they don't compare notes. And if they are from a family where this behavior is perpetuated across generations then sure the whole family will jump right in to con you. Either way, but I think both explains his family to you.

So you have to get "In Sheep's Clothing", and other books too. So you can spot the leaopards in the grass. They can be glib and charming on the surface, but you are sleeping with the enemy as you said. No worse person to be sleeping with. I had to own this, meaning accept that something about me meant I was a target of these kinds of predators. It was my responsibility to take charge and protect myself from it. So therefore I studied them. How can I spot them? There are two ways to approach it that reinforce one another. The first is to start using your radar. But the other is to learn about them intellectually.

It turns out that regardless of what kind of predator this is, they all follow a strikingly similar playbook. They aren't all that smart, actually. They just have no scruples. You need to learn the names of all the tactics like the double bind. Your radar is going to get good enough to where the instant you feel it you will say "double bind". If you can call them by name, your manipulator can't get away with it. Once you spot any of these tactics being used - that person is the enemy. If they do this, then separate yourself from them. No good can come of it.
