greetings!

I am trying to bring my Costa Rican boyfriend to the usa so i have decided to marry him in Costa Rica and then apply for a CR-1 Visa. I am aware that I have to show an Affidavit of Support. My issue is that I have spent the past 2 years teaching english abroad and volunteering (without legal papers and definitley under the USA poverty line.) When i come visit home I usually substitute teach and waitress while in town to make money. However I do have a big chunnk of change in the bank so I'm thinking this may help me? I'm not sure how to prove that although i do not make a steady income of 18,000- since I have been living outside the usa- we will not have monetary issues. Help! thanks

I Don't Know Young Lady. The Case will seem Bazaar.

(members don't give me ####### because you seen the Post and just sat there like me too)

Is it wise to marry when you know you will fail USCIS Income requirements? How big is this Chunk of change? Is it 3 times the poverty Level (about $60,000.00)

Is there a Co-Sponsor? I think you are thinking with your Heart right now and not possibly with your head... ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE THOUGH.

You will have to show Support. I'm Impressed you teach School.

You will not apply for a CR-1 visa, you will file a petition. Your spouse will apply for a CR-1 visa from the Embassy after the petition you filed has been approved.

As for your financial situation as it relates to requirements for sponsorship, you will likely need a joint sponsor (IMO).

As mentioned, it depends on how big the ":chunk of money" is. Sponsoring on assets alone is possible; we did it as my husband lived abroad with me. They usually want you to be comfortably over the x3 poverty guideline, so if you have less than $70'000, I'd look for a co-sponsor.

As other posters have said, unless you have a $70,000 bank account, you'll need a Co-sponsor.

This can really be anyone, as long as they're willing to take on the (huge) responsibility of sponsoring him.

They'll pretty much be financially responsible for him until he's either a citizen, or can show for 40 quarters of income in the US.

I'd recommend reading through some of the guides here on VJ relating to the affidavit of support.

Best of luck!

All good information but if you're not married yet, you're at least six months from needing to provide an affidavit of support. One viable option is to come back to the USA soon after the marriage and get a job earning enough money to qualify on your own.
