I just started filling out the paperwork for my green card today and how it works.... I print out a copy of the form , fill it out with pencil just to make sure I'm filling it out right, as a practice.

I just finished I-485 and there are some things I really don't understand

1. What is an A#?

2. I'm currently out of status. However there is a question on the form about " Current USCIS status " , what would be the proper answer?

3. I entered on a K-1, however I have no idea what is the answer to the question " on what status did you last enter?".

4. There is also a question, were you inspected by a US immigration officer? The answer is yes, correct?

5. Is the nonimmigrant visa number same as control number or is it the long number on the bottom of visa?

6. For part B Of section 3 I did write down my husband's information, however the A# and the question " applying with you ?" kinda throw me off. I have to write his information down in that section, correct?

TIA

The correct answers are the truth.

1. It's your Alien number, It's written bottom right of your visa (A# followed by 9 numbers)

2. If you entered on a K1, you're a K1. When applying for AOS you enter a period of authorized stay.

3. K1.

4. If you activated your K1, you went through secondary, were questioned and gave them your sealed package, hence yes, you went through customs and your were inspected.

5. I believe it's the control number. Perhaps someone else can confirm that.

6. I don't understand your question. If you didn't move to the US with any children, then no one is applying with you.

Your A# should be on your NOA2. Sometimes the one on the visa or your I-94 is miswritten.

The A# for us was on the NOA2 right above the beneficiary's name and no where else. The visa number is the red number on the K-1 visa. FOr Part B of section 3 you list your husband and your children if any. Then you indicate if any of them are applying for AOS with you. Your husband, as a USC , is not applying with you--does he have an A#? if not put "N/A"--are there any children you are listing? Are any of them immigrating with you? If they are, are you applying for AOS for them using this application?

To summarize: You put your husband's name, DOB, Country of birth, relationship (spouse), A# (if naturalized, if USC by birth then "N/A"), applying with you "NO". Then you list any children you have had. You check "YES" IF and ONLY IF you are filing AOS for them with this application--which means they arrived on a K-2 typically.

Hope this helps,

Dave

1. The A number on the visa isn't to be trusted. NOA2 only.

2. K1

3. K1

4. No not everyone goes through secondary. I didn't, I just went through the regular line and the officer at the desk deal with my envelope. "Inspected" means went through immigration at the border.

5. It's the RED number on the visa.

6. The form isn't just for people in the same circumstances as you. Some people file AOS as a family, or thanks to work or whatever. Dave&Roza answered this well.
