NOA1! - receiving hard copy abroad?

Hi all,

I've been browsing these forums for a while in the run up to filing our I130, and I'm very happy to say that we just got our NOA1 email and our application has been forwarded to the california service center (makes me not so happy, according to the stats they have the longest processing times atm).

I have a question regarding the hard copy of the NOA1 (I797) though, my wife and me currently live in Europe, and the email said it would take about 7-10 days for the letter to arrive. Does anybody know if the USCIS actually sends the letters to addresses abroad? I recently spoke with their customer service phone line, they told me they do not send any communications to addresses outside of the US - unfortunately they only told me this after we had sent the I130 package off. The actual visa application will be going through the austrian embassy in vienna once the I130 is approved, any chance USCIS will send the I797 to them?

Thanks in advance!

The Embassy will not need the I-797. An I-797 is only an acknowledgement that your petition has been received, the other I-797 you receive (the NOA2) is the receipt of the adjudication decision. The Embassy will not need the NOA2 either because the interview would not be taking place without an approved petition from USCIS.

Well their call center agents gave you wrong information: they DO sent the NOAs to foreign addresses. We received both our NOA1 and NOA2 here in France. The first one took about 2 weeks and the second just a little more than a week to arrive in our mailbox.

Thank you so much for the info Laure&Colin!

Another question I'd have for you specifically: your signature says you got your NOA2 in 19 days, which is amazingly fast! Could you tell me which service center processed your I130? I'm currently expecting this to take about 6 months, 19 days would be a dream come true.

edit: just saw you went through california as well in your profile, that makes me quite hopeful. all the best for your interview!
