Then you need to learn about that FIRST. There is far more to this process than a visa. The visa allows you bring them here and enter the US, the AOS allows them to stay, the rest is needed for life in the United States. Without an SSN you will not be able to function normally, if at all.

One thing is that the BMV for getting a drivers permit/license is linked to SS, so you need not only to have your conditional green card but your SSAN. Also if you want to put your spouse on your companies medical benefits it is required also. Also on a bank account. These are just several reasons why you need one. It is not hard to do and the name change can be done after you get the conditional green card and then SS will verify it in their system which is linked to immigrations. Why be so hard headed, just get it done. So what if you have to go back a second time just for a name change.

I'm trying to loosely plan out the wedding - more so on the civil ceremony.

I was wondering whether once I POE if we should just do the civil ceremony pretty quick or wait until I'm in the system and apply for the SSN card then get married.

Which process would be easier, or is it pretty much the same? If it matters, I won't be changing my last name to my fiance's.

I waited until after I got married and had the certified marriage license before I went to the SSA office, that way I won't have to go back to change name.

This is how it went...the day after POE, we went to get the marriage license, then three days later got married, brought the marriage license to the county clerk for registration two days after the wedding. Two weeks later, we went to the SSA office to get SSN and received the SS card after a week.

Which is great however some SSA's won't let you get ssn or change your name and give you a hard time on what to do then - you can stand there for hours but if they won't give in, you're either forced to go home, write an email through their webpage and come back, or go to a different SSA.

Some have even had difficulties getting an ssn before marriage because the employee and supervisor are not familiar with the K1. They had never seen a K1 where I applied. I had no problems other than explaining the nonimmigrant/immigrant situation to them when typing it into their system and finding the right boxes to tick. But every other week there's a new post about someone having problems.
