I am entitled to US citizenship under tittle 301g. Should I apply for a certificate on citizenship (H600) or U.S. Passport

First Off, I would like to thank everyone that can help me with this. I recently became aware (after 28yrs! in this country) that I am eligible for U.S. citizenship under INA ACT tittle 3 section 301g. My mother was a dependent of a U.S diplomat until she was 16 yrs. old and was living abroad for most of her life. We are firm that I fall under section 301g. Now, it's time to move forward and I have read posts/threads mentioning how a H600 ap. will only provide a certificate of citizenship. Should I just proceed with an H600 application right now or should I apply for a passport instead? We have all the documentation required to prove my mom's dependency up to the age of 16 and that her father worked as a diplomat abroad (she has all her diplomatic passports from that time). Again, thank you for all your input. I currently have resident alien status.

If you are able to get a US passport and have all documents, that would be the faster and cheaper process when compared to N600. There is a likelihood that the Department of State comes back to you and still wants an N600 but you could take that chance. Below is a list of documents you must have to go directly to the US passport application route:

If you claim citizenship through birth abroad to U.S. citizen parent(s), but cannot submit a Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, you must submit all of the following:

1. Your foreign birth certificate (translated to English)

2. Evidence of citizenship of your U.S. citizen parent.

3. Your parents' marriage certificate.

4. A statement of your U.S. citizen parent detailing all periods and places of residence or physical presence in the United States and abroad before your birth.

You can read more about the Department of State's requirements here: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/secondary_evidence/secondary_evidence_4315.html
