Y'know, the last 4+ pages of this thread, if broken off, would go admirably (pardon the Navy reference) in the brand-spankin'-new Military Forum, si man. Can be arranged?

Sorry TBone, I guess we did wreck your thread.

The Chinese weren't planning on taking prisoners. they had no food themselves, they intended on obliterating the 1 Marines from the face of the earth. USAF dropped bridge pieces over a 1500ft. span after the Chinese blew it up. So glad that your father made it out alive.

About the roughest going ever in history or close to. Only Napoleons retreat from Moscow and Russia could it be compared to. A friggin Million Chinese tried to stop the Marines and failed. USAF had the air though.

A General I believe said at the time, "Retreat, hell we are just fighting in a different direction."

Thanks, My dad was awesome. Glad he made it out.

Yeah I know. FUBAR it was as usual at the start. It was not the best of moments but it was heroic. They had to fight through maybe upwards of 50 times their manpower and take hills along the way of marching out all the way to the final link up and safety under the worst of conditions. Every bridge had been blown by the enemy that they had to repair or go around. Wave after wave at times of Chinese soldiers bent on stopping the Marines.

My Father wasn't at the Chosin but he was in Korea and injured badly twice. Pusan breakout but never could find out how he got hurt the second time. Just knew he was hurt bad.

I have much respect for what the UN forces especially the Marines and Army did in Korea, and the supporting rolls of the Airforce and the as normal, excellent and on time Naval gunfire. It was nothing less than heroic to breakout from being totally surrounded and out manned by the communist forces. While fighting their way back to the rear and repelling numerous attacks and ambushes. My hat is off to those brave men that took part in that war.

Yes it was a real FUBAR with forces spread over hundreds of miles and two senior military commanders having beef with each other from the very start, along with other issues. My point was more along the line of, in the history of the campaigns the Marine Corps has been involved in, they did not get to fully unleash the dogs of war on the enemy as they were capable of.

My regards to your father for his service.

"Retreat, hell! We're not retreating, we're just advancing in a different direction."

That would be Major General Oliver P. Smith, USMC.

The UN forces were definitely under strength for the mission, you are right, the Air force and Naval air assets ruled the skies and the US Navy controlled the port and waters around Hungnam.

In addition to the comparison to Napoleon's retreat from Russia, it is considered the "the greatest evacuation by sea in U.S. military history."

Captain Barber and Fox Hill is something that every Marine looks on with great pride. Weather dropped to -54F but they did manage to secure Toktong Pass and the 1st Marines made it out while being swarmed by the Chinese.

Truly miraculous what Colonel Barber and 200 Marines of Fox Company did at Toktong Pass for five days when he was a Captain. Not only did they have the communist Chinese to fight, they also had the extreme cold, frostbite, frozen roads, weapon malfunctions and frozen ground.

A tradition of focusing on discipline and marksmanship made the difference in 200 Marines taking out over 1,000 enemy troops and holding that position for five days.
