Thank you, "no wussy Coastie" here, I still have mud and dirty in my ears from those weeks in the field. I was with an artillery battalion, we hit the field weeks before to prep for the deployment to Korea. We had a Colonel and a Sergeant Major, (both were pushing 30 years of active duty) those two old warhorses loved being in the field, Lord knows I hated them both for that.

I was amazed at what a couple of MRE's or the old style C-rations could get a cold and damn near frozen young guy in a muddy field, while on guard-duty.

Those old war horse Gunnery Sgt.'s would probably write me today if they knew the stunts we pulled.

I, Sir, will not stand for your Coast Guard bashing.rofl.gifrofl.gifrofl.gif Being in the field is where you avoid having to deal with the barracks and someone who was crazy enough eat some pseudo-edible biohazards known as MREs or Unitized Group Rations (so-called because it unitizes the insides of any group unwary enough to consume them ) and the concomitant effluence of highly toxic nerve gas that made the pit seem like a welcome relief. rofl.gifrofl.gifrofl.gif

For sure. I have read where during the Korean war the stories and after suffering through two winters in Korea myself I couldn't imagine the agony. I do know the Marines suffered heavily there up near the Chosin reservoir. One of the most famous Marine sayings came from that episode on the march back to the sea.

Yeah it was strange the loud booms but could never see a thing. Not even a contrail.

That would be the Frozen Chosin.

They did suffer, but they managed to punished the Chinese with a serious can of whooparse.

However, it was not the Corps finest moment. There was a bit of tension between the Army General and the Marine General in command at that time.

"The Marines I have seen around the world have the cleanest bodies, the filthiest minds, the highest morale, and the lowest morals of any group of animals I have ever seen. Thank God for the United States Marine Corps!" - Eleanor Roosevelt, First Lady of the United States, 1945.

 You don't know how much that cold wears the body out until you experience it.

Will eat kimchi and shin ramyun until they don't make it anymore.

That was the mystery of the Habu, you never saw it, but you knew those two window rattling sonic booms.

True, very true, not like wandering around Mt. Shasta. whistling.gifwhistling.gifwhistling.gif

I got love for the Coasties, admire the ability to be on water and breaking ice in the dead of winter.

Personally, I prefer the old K-rations, UGR-B's...not so sure about them either.

Yeap, Mt. Shasta would be a warm day at the beach compared to a week in the middle of winter in Pusan, Korea.

Captain Barber and Fox Hill is something that every Marine looks on with great pride. Weather dropped to -54F but they did manage to secure Toktong Pass and the 1st Marines made it out while being swarmed by the Chinese.

Yeah I know. FUBAR it was as usual at the start. It was not the best of moments but it was heroic. They had to fight through maybe upwards of 50 times their manpower and take hills along the way of marching out all the way to the final link up and safety under the worst of conditions. Every bridge had been blown by the enemy that they had to repair or go around. Wave after wave at times of Chinese soldiers bent on stopping the Marines.

My Father wasn't at the Chosin but he was in Korea and injured badly twice. Pusan breakout but never could find out how he got hurt the second time. Just knew he was hurt bad.

Y'know, the last 4+ pages of this thread, if broken off, would go admirably (pardon the Navy reference) in the brand-spankin'-new Military Forum, si man. Can be arranged?

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

If you need to use your handy, dandy Enfield because that shiny M14 DMR just froze, it's cold enough.

The Chinese weren't planning on taking prisoners. they had no food themselves, they intended on obliterating the 1 Marines from the face of the earth. USAF dropped bridge pieces over a 1500ft. span after the Chinese blew it up. So glad that your father made it out alive.
