Have you factored in the 40% decline in the dollar, from all that borrowing over the last 6 years? If not for the decline in home prices, we would be looking at double digit inflation. If you look at commodities like copper and steel, you understand why the world in drowning in oil, yet gasoline prices under Obama have doubled. The US is exporting refined products like gasoline and fuel oil, to places like China and Japan, because they have run out of places to store the product.

I understand that perfectly, and we could add many other reasons. However 2012 being an election year does not explain a 4 year upward trend. I'm interested in why someone would make that assertion. It's actually not a whole lot higher now than it was a year ago.

True. It has been flirting with 12,800 since the crash. There are some signs that 12,800 is no longer a ceiling, but rather a new floor. It will take a few more weeks before the institutions settle into the market, and we get a better indication of which direction the market will take, and what the new trading range will be. Right now, is it being driven largely by pipe dreams, desperation, and speculation.
