Hi All,

I am moving to IL, USA from Australia in few days, I need help with requirements of drivers license in IL . I Currently hold a Full Drivers License issued in Australia and also have a international License (translation). I need some information on how long does it take to get the License and the process involved. Also i need to know how much the car insurance will cost per year I live in Wheeling, IL. Are there any cheaper Insurance alternatives.

Thanks in Advance

You need one document in each of the A, B and C categories, two documents from the D category.

Category A would be your passport or foreign driver's license, that also shows your i-94 (unexpired)

B is your passport(showing birth date)

Apply for SSN, when you get it, save the letter to show proof of government mail received at your address(category D).

You might have to pass a written test. I don't know about the rest. Here's a link; http://www.cyberdriveillinois.com/publications/pdf_publications/dsd_x173.pdf

K1 process, October 2010 > POE, July 2011

I-129F approved in 180 days from NOA1 date. (195 days from filing to NOA2 in hand)

Interview took 224 days from I-129F NOA1 date. (241 days from filing petition until visa in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until POE: 285 days

Click timeline or "about me" for all details.

AOS process, December 2011 > July 2012

EAD/AP Approval took 51 days from NOA1 date to email update. (77 days from filing until EAD/AP in hand)

AOS Approval took 206 days from NOA1 date to email update. (231 days from filing until greencard in hand)

From filing I-129F petition until greencard in hand: 655 days

Im in Delaware and I have many friends scattered in other states....

Its very annoying but you have to do what is similiar to the learners test over here first up...then yes...they make you do a drivers test.......but unlike the scarry horrible drivers tests we did in Australia, they just make you drive around the car park out the back of the DVR....no hand brake start, no 3.2 turns, no traffic to change lanes into...none of that...just a reverse park and a couple of turns...and that seems to be country wide....

a very good friend of mine buggered up the reverse park a little, and they said, 'youll be right...you been driving for X amt years anyway'

So dont stress...

Oh, and you may not be able to do the both in the one day...mine were 6 weeks apart - learners test to drivers test....I screamed the damn place down so worried I wont be able to drive...they just said...dont worry (cop stood there saying it to) youre ok to drive under your australian licence...just as long as its still valid...

so before you leave australia....go in and get your licence extended to the longest expiry date you possibly can...for just in case...

oh forgot to mention insurance...

once you get your learners...you will get junk mail galore regarding insurance....geiko have ads going day and night...I hear they are supposed to be reasonable....???

The OP is coming to the US with CR-1/IR-1 so there is no I-94. But what you said about the SS# is correct.

OP, I brought my Nicaraguan license but they wouldn't take it. I needed two pieces of "formal" mail showing my address in IL. I brought my Social Security card where it showed it was mailed to my IL address and since I was missing a second piece, my husband filled out an Affidavit right there at the DMV. They already have the form for the affidavit, your spouse just has to fill it out "testifying" that you indeed live at that address. I had to take both the written and road test but they were easy and fast. I think I was there for just a little over an hour.

Hope that helps and good luck.

i went in with two pieces of mail with my us address on it. and my passport, birth certificate and my ssn card. The SSN card will take a few weeks so you should wait until you have that. They do not use visa only mastercard or cash at the location i went to in mount prospect. i had to do a written multiple choice quest. was only about 2 pages, kind of easy really. i was in and out in a couple of hours.

What i did first was go to the bank, we were able to open a bank of america account with just my passport. and they printed off an opening statement right there that works for one of the address id's. then i went to ssa office, when i got that mail it also counted as my 2nd piece of address proof. then my pass port and drivers licence from canada were proof of signature ande my birth certificate for my age. Utilities with your us address on it as well as your name will work as well.

Bummer! The people at the DMV were actually helpful. I was surprised to be out of there so quickly.

Wow, I completely missed that, thanks for pointing it out!

My then-fiance filled out an affidavit too. I guess Indiana and Illinois are very similar.
