Traveling home from Vancouver today I got some sass from a border guard at the Peace Arch land crossing. Apparently it's mandatory to provide my Nexus card AND Green Card. Is this true? I've tried Google but nothing significant is coming up. I usually just show my Nexus if needed and be on my merry way.

Technically (from what I remember of the online Nexas info) unless your Nexas card shows your citizenship as US you must show proof you have authorization to be in the US (visa/GC or US Passport) along with your Nexas card. I have dual citizenship but they only put your citizenship at birth on the Nexas card (mine is Canadian) so every time I cross they want to see my US Passport or other proof of my US Citizenship. They do this even though both my passports are linked to my Nexas card, I am sure if they pulled me aside they would let me in but not worth the hastle so I just hand them both my card and US passport and they seem happy. So for you better to hand them both the Nexas and the Green Card. Also remember you are supposed to have your Green Card on you at all times and provide it to CIS officers if requested (they do not need a reason to ask for it). While I was on a Green Card I was stopped at a random immigration checkpoint once on a trip where I was not even leaving the country and had left my card at home by accident and was given a lecture on how I am supposed to always have it on me even if not leaving the country...

I have been told (never had a nexus card) that one should make sure they update their info on their nexus card. And the POE officer has every right to check your legality into the USA.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

The document you need to provide to enter the US as a LPR is your green card. Your Nexus card is extra and doesn't not stand for/replace it.

If you use your Nexus card to cross through in a NEXUS lane, or line at the airport, you HAVE to show them both your NEXUS card and your green card. It's the proof you are an LPR.

Sometimes they ask for my passport with the NEXUS card, but only if I'm flying, I've never been asked driving. The NEXUS card does not prove your citizenship or permanent resident status, it only proves you are a trusted traveler.

If you go through regular ol' customs lines then you can just show your Green Card.

Last time I used my NEXUS card I totally forgot it was in my maiden name and my new passport was in my married name. It was the first time in forever they asked for my passport, luckily I was carrying my marriage certificate with me. I was in Calgary long enough that I made an appointment, paid the $25.00 for a replacement card, had the name on my card changed and mailed to me before I left Canada, no issues going home.

p.s.

Don't ever ever ever loose that card, it's a pain in the @$$ to have it replaced, I had to do the whole schpeel, including fees over again. Which involved me driving 8 hours from Knoxville, TN to Detroit!)

Thank you for the replies. I guess I was taken offguard because coming home I'm not always asked for my Green Card (I travel a couple times a month at least) in addition to the Nexus card. I always carry my Green Card so it's not a problem, I just didn't remember being explicitly told I had to provide both when using the Nexus lane. My husband certainly isn't asked for supporting documents.

Soon I wont have to worry about this though! :)

I have CR1 status and my green card just expired. I previously filed the paperwork to get the condition removed and received my I-751 receipt notice so I have an extension on my status for a year.

I went through Nexus and I was stopped by customs because my green card was showing as expired in the nexus system. I was carrying the I-751 letter that shows my conditional status as extended and yet I was given a Nexus violation. Has anyone had this happen? I don't have an updated green card so I didn't think there was anything to update. The customs officer said I needed to go into an erollment office and have the I-751 entered into the system. I thought it was fine to have the expired green card as long as I had the letter with me when they asked about it. I didn't think the letter was something the enrollment office needed to see. Any one else have this happen?

Actually, something similar just happened to me. Flying through Pearson with Nexus, I had to go through secondary inspection because the system flagged me as having an expired document. I had checked the GOES system weeks before but nothing was on the GOES system that indicated I had an expired document (passport, driver's license, nexus all good). So the officer said that it was because I didn't update my renewed TN status. How is that even fair if the document doesn't even show on the GOES system?! And I have gone in and out with "an expired TN" like a dozen times since I've renewed it and no one has said anything until Pearson. So I got a violation for not updating my TN. I can't use it until I update it.

I'm Canadian on a TN and he's my American boy!

The letter is technically your new greencard so that makes sense that you should change your Nexus.

When I used my expired card and stamped passport with I-751 extension back in December they made me go through secondary. Reading all of these posts makes me realize it was probably to update the system with the new document/date since the card was expired.

I had the worst time trying to update my information on the GOES system. I finally called my enrollment centre and left a message. They returned my call a few days later and told me just to drop by the next time I'm in the area..... something I had tried doing a few times before.... but without success as there was no one around to help me. I found it a bit shocking that she had no concern at all that my information was outdated. I guess cause she's not the one who's going to be violated.

But, yes, you need to show your GC with your NEXUS..... at both the US and Canadian POE's. That's how they determine your residency and their line of questioning.
