Hi all,

Since my new immigrant parents are new in this state, TN, they need to get the driver license/ learning permit. Yet the officer told me that my parents would need 2 proof of residency.

Well, as a new comer, the only thing they have for this requirement is I-551 (LPR card, which is not counted as a proof of residency).

They currently don't have to pay any bills or dont have any bank statement, since they are living with me.

which document should I show to DMV that my parents are living with me? or should I bring them all the USCIS's petition paper work?

How can I prove to them that I'm my parents' legal guardian?

Thank you

Spend $1 on a rental contract that you can buy at any office store. Rent out a room to your parents. That's their proof of residency in the state.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

While you may be taking care of your parents, you are not their legal guardian unless you have a court order stating so. Legal guardianship involves the court. Taking care of your parents alone does not give you any legal powers to represent or make decisions for them. To legally represent your parents, you would need either to go to the court for a legal guardianship or conservatorship, or you would need them to sign Power of Attorneys to you. (Don't confuse being able to interpret for your parents when they are present with the legal authority to represent them when they are not with you. If they go with you to the DMV, you would not be representing them - you are simply there to interpret.)

There are several ways to help your parents;

1. Get a rental contract from Office Depot or Staples. You essentially will rent out rooms to your parents. The rental contract will show their TN residency.

2. Your parents can open a bank account with a $100. The statements will show their TN residency.

3. Your parent's green cards (I-551).
