Translation of documents....

Hi all,

I have been doing some research on this forum and am getting mixed answers, plus some of the old discussions on this topic are 3 years old, so things may have changed...anyways, do his papers - birth certificate, baptism certificate, police record- need to be translated into English, his native language is Spanish. For the interview, but if not for the interview does he have to have them for sure for AOS. Also he is fluent in both languages so can he translate them him self and get them notorized, I also read he could write a paragraph that states he is fluent in both languages and sign and date it... Thank you for any help/advice!

notorized not needed.. you are correct in last statement..

check out the US Embassy website for colombia.. and see what it mentions..

i seem to recall that Venezuela was ok with spanish or english.. but i, myself, will check that again.. BEFORE we get to interview phase..

So, I went to my interview with some documents in English and some others in Spanish. I didn't have any problems with either one of the people who handled my file. The 1st helps you to get your documentation in order. She was a Colombian woman, very friendly and helpful, she did not have any issue with them. Then the CO (American) reviewed my entire folder and it was the same. She didn't have any trouble with them and was also very nice.

What I think is an issue is if you have any documentation in another language, other than Spanish or English. In my case, I have papers in French, so those SHOULD be translated by a certified translator. Even if you both speak the languages fluently, you have to think that anything you present to the Embassy become official documents and it's better if you treat them as such.

Informality is not the best policy in this case, IMHO.

Check with the Embassy if they need translations for the interview.

For the K-1 interview at the US Embassy/Consulate, he may not need to get his documents translated. However, he will need to have them translated when he files for this Adjustment of Status. So, why not just get them translated now?

Since your fiancee is fluent in both English and Spanish, he can do the translation himself. He does not need to get the translation notarized. All he needs to do is include a certification block as required by USCIS.

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

Jack&Anna, thanks for your feedback as your response is consistent with what others who have had interviews have reported about the embassy in Bogota but just in case we get the evil woman who takes the papers, we plan to have the BC in both English and Spanish. Also, if her BC was issued more than two years after her birth, did you also present them the bapitismal certificate as well? Clau does not have the original so we might need more doco.
