A-levels and America!! Please help!

Hello everyone,

I am currently studying Biology, Chemistry and History A-levels in the UK. I also have 11 GCSE's at A and A* grades.

I have spent hours trawling websites and trying to find out information as to whether these will be recognised in the United States and whether I will be able to apply for college with them (when i get my k-1 visa). I know I'll probably have to take some form of GED or SAT or something, but I was wondering whether my A-levels will actually count for anything.

I am serioiusly considering just dropping out of college and abandoning them - I don't see the point of putting a lot of time and effort into something if it won't benefit me in the States. Also, if I were to drop them, that means I can visit the US for a lot longer and spend more time with my fiance, which will obviously make me much happier than I currently am! (But obviously my education/career/future needs to come first)

Any idea if I actually need them? I'm going to apply to Front Range Community College in Colorado for Vet Tech.

:help:

Victoria yes A-Level counts...it's superior to GED and stuffs. All you have to do is send your transcripts and result to World Education Service (www.wes.org) for evaluation of its U.S equivalence. You might go to college without taking any tests through this process.

Of course they will count. There are several credentialing services that will evaluate the courses you have taken and what they are equivalent to so that your new school can give you credit for them.

For my step daughter we used Educational Credential Evaluators www.ece.org. Most important to know is which evaluation company your new school uses or recognizes. Check with Front Range CC and see what company they prefer, and send your transcripts there for evaluation.

They will count. If you only had GCSE's, then I don't think you could get into university in the US.

Thank you for all your help guys, I actually heard back from Front Range today and although the first time I messaged them, they seemed to not know what they were talking about at all this time they said,

"we do not require a high school diploma to attend our college. We do offer the ACCUPLACER placement test."

If you are doing so well in school, maybe you should consider a somewhat more advanced college. Your A-levels will be the equivalent of a high school diploma. The GSCEs are not. It's a bit odd that a secondary school doesn't require a HS diploma, don't you think? Maybe that's a sign it's not such a good school?

You're right, it's not a great school but it's not awful either and it's pretty much the only school in the entire state of Colorado that offers vet tech! (which is definitely what I want to do) and it's accredited by the AVMA, so I can't see there being a problem with the degree I'm getting!.. hopefully anyway.
