Will Tourist Visa turn down hurt Student Visa application?

If someone was turned down for a tourist visa (for not having demonstrated ties to return) but then got into a college program and received an I-120, will that hurt the Student Visa application?

Also, nothing has changed in terms as the reason of denial from the tourist visa. There is no more guarantee the person would return from a student Visa then the Tourist visa, and the student visa asked for is more than a year instead of the 3 months asked for in the tourist visa.

Do they have different determining factors on an F1 than a B2, because I'm thinking the Student Visa will also be denied for the same reason. I guess there are two issues: the fact that no ties to the home country have changed, and whether a tourist visa denial hurts the Student visa application even more.

Thanks in advance!

edited to say- I'm not sure which section this post should best be located: Tourist Visa or Student Visa. I guess the Student Visa in terms of what is currently being applied for but the Tourist Visa for lessons learned?

the motivation for this sudden interest to study after having been denied a tourist visa will be all too apparent...no doubt this 'friend' wanted to find a way to join up with his/her USC S.O. and when the tourist visa route was closed, now this 'friend' will have to sell the idea of why he/she 'needs to' study something in the US...and no doubt the sponsor for said education will be none other than the USC S.O. as before...

There is a chance it will hurt it, and a chance it won't. It depends on the timeline and a host of other factors. If you fill in your country you might get more specific help.

Its a 50/50 chance. It depends on the timeline and the interviewing CO. Wish you luck

Does it make a difference that the original tourist visa's purpose was stated to visit grad schools (this well also said at the interview). This wasn't a 'sudden interest', but she wanted to visit a couple schools in person before taking the plunge.

I'm not trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes, of course we want to be together for awhile while she studies, no harm in that, that's why I used myself as the sponsor. This might not have been the best idea, but the truth is she was going to be staying with me, I had to put myself down.

and the issue will be what will motivate her to depart the US after her education instead of staying put and marrying you? Answer??????????? (I'm guessing there isn't one).

Oh, now you add a boyfriend in the mix. That changes things.

Wait, why would I want her to go back if things are good with us? I don't want her to have any motivation to return! Anyway, this thread can be closed now! The answer was No, it won't ruin your chances. But she did get worked over and questioned a lot about me. Surprising that they perferred her getting in a program that runs for years over just coming over for a couple of months, but Noah is right.. if the end goal was her staying with me post-school, maybe they think the school can track her more than a simple tourist visa. seems over-kill to me though, I'd have taken their chances and just given her the tourist visa. But I'm not complaining, just don't understand this silly system.

So she has a Student Visa?
