I'm thinking of buying a Kia Soul. They are surprisingly roomy inside! Not to mention the price is within my limited budget.

After buying a vehicle, do you attempt to maintain that precious “new car smell” for as long as possible? If so, you might want to rethink your ways.

According to a new study from the Ecology Center, the beloved smell is actually the scent of toxic chemicals such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Used to make plastics flexible and interiors fire-proof, the chemicals are often associated with allergies, birth defects, impaired learning, liver toxicity, and cancer.

The study, published on Healthystuff.org earlier this week, ranks the most and least toxic cars of the year. Researchers tested over 200 popular 2011- and 2012-model vehicles for chemicals that off-gas from car parts such as the steering wheel and dashboard.

“Research shows that vehicle interiors contain a unique cocktail of hundreds of toxic chemicals that off-gas in small, confined spaces,” said Jeff Gearhart, Research Director at the Ecology Center in a press release. “Since these chemicals are not regulated, consumers have no way of knowing the dangers they face.”

Some aver that thee Soul doesn't exist but others feel strongly that it is a metaphysical part of our being. Jewish tradition holds that a sold may be of two types: the Yetzer Hatov )inclination towards good) or Yetzer Hara (inclination towards evil). Islamic tradition holds that there are three basic or fundamental stages of the soul: Nafs-i-Ammarah (or the want to commit evil, similar to the classic Freudian id), Nafs-i-lawwama (the self-accusatory stage where the actions of the id are examined and questioned and Nafs-i-mutam'inna ( the contented soul). Those are my thoughts about the soul.

OP - I watched the video above and it was informative. One thing that I learned from the video and don't like about this vehicle is that they've replaced the spare tire with an air pump. That air pump won't do any good if the tire is severely damaged when it goes flat. That very thing happened to me in September 2011. Fortunately, I had a spare and was on my way in a short time. With just an air pump, the Kia Soul driver will be stuck on the side of the road with no spare tire at all. Maybe they have the spare as an option, but it's definitely worth checking out.

What are you constipated? A lower form of primate who grunts and groans? Lighten up! Each of us can give input but caveat emptor. Spooks gave another alternative, Stephen pointed out something might be important for someone who is sensitive to allergens and ☠ wisely pointed out that a low-mileage used vehicle will allow one to purchase a premium quality vehicle at a more affordable price. This opens up a whole world of possibilities that might not have been considered. That's not what anyone, except yourself, would call nonsense.

I wonder if they could use new car smell to entice a buyer into making an unwise purchase. It just struck me that people associate that smell with a new car but aside from the VOCs released does it affect the ability to make a well-reasoned decision. Might be something to consider for our potential Kia owner.

i worked on a 2011 not long ago. its a structurally sound car. i'm personally not much of a fan of the body style. i'd be fine w/ a family member driving or riding in one.
