Hello Everyone,

I am an Indian. I live in Italy right now. I am pursuing research here. I would like to visit usa on four weeks of vacation in August 2012.

I have some doubts regarding the visa procedure

1. My cousin lives in usa and she is willing to give me invitation letter. Another friend of mine also like to give me invitation letter. I would like to stay with my cousin for two weeks and two weeks with my friend.

Will one invitation letter from my cousin enough for four weeks of vacation? or should My friend have to give me invitation letter?

2. does my cousin or my friend have to show enough funds in bank to sponsor my visit?

3. If my cousin only gives me invitation letter for US visa application, should I have to visit only her or am I allowed to visit friends in other states?

4. How much money should I have to show in my bank account for one month US visit.

Thank you very much in advance

Invitation letter is NOT required, and it can make the application look weaker, not stronger.

AOS for my husband
8/17/10: INTERVIEW DAY (day 123) APPROVED!!

ROC:
5/23/12: Sent out package
2/06/13: APPROVED!

At the interview, there is no invitation required, the officer hardly asks for it, just a piece of paper. No one in the US will sponsor for you (that will mean you have no tie with your country.) There is no requirement about your account, you have to show them you have no intention at all to immigrate.

Thank you very much for your reply. I would like to visit USA for about 4 weeks and then I would reutrn.

I have strong tie up with italy since I am pursuing ph.d here.

I also receive stipend (I can produce documents related to school and stipend). I can show my bank transactions since last year or past 6 months.

There is no statement about the minimum balance in your account to show proof, but school letter in Italy could be a good proof. Good luck.

Nancy, Thank you very much!

I will ask my professor to give me the letter.

all such letters have zero value...your professor does not control your behavior, your actual home is not Italy and all the invitation letters in the world have no meaning....all of those explain why you want to go to the US; proving beyond a shadow of a doubt why you would depart the US is the biggest challenge.

Since you are living in Italy and pursuing a PhD there, you have a very good basis for getting your visa application approved. When asked, just tell the truth and point out that you will need to be back in Italy in order to keep going.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I don't know how it works in Italy, but here in DK a Phd position is considered an employment with salary. You would be better off to bring the Phd contract from the university as evidence instead of a letter from your supervisor.

$100 a day would be a low ball sort of number.

Thank you everyone for responding my queries :)

I attended the visa interview on apr.26 and my application was held for AP. After the interview I did not have any hope. On may 16 visa was stamped. I received the passport and other documents today by courier, well there was a problem with courier service.

I have received the visa for 10 years!
