RFE asking us to send original resident card

So I got stuff in the mail the other day and it is basically an RFE for my wife that has handwritten instructions to mail her green card to them. Has anyone had this happen? I don't think there is anything wrong with the application because they cashed the check and they also sent the extension notice for my stepdaughter, who was included on the application to remove conditions. However, they didn't send the extension notice for my wife. I included copies of both of their green cards with the application so I don't understand why my stepdaughter gets the extension letter and my wife is told she needs to send her card to them.

If anyone has had this happen, will they send the card back? I thought it is the extension letter along with the card that shows proof of legal residence while waiting for the new card.

I hope this is just a matter of them not being able to see something on the copy of the card that I sent to them. However, I made my wife's copy and stepdaughter's copy with the same copy machine.

Thanks

Is it possible that maybe the copy of your wife's green card was not legible but your daughters was fine? could be they just want the original to see it if the copy wasn't good. you could always call them and ask, sometimes they don't give much info though

That's a tough-y - I think you're right to be wary about trusting the actual card in the mail. The hand-written portion ALSO sounds highly unusual to me. Have you tried calling the service number or getting an infopass appointment?

When we got an RFE which was not straight forward for the original AOS, I got my congressman involved. They have contacts which we do not have access to, and were able to speak with someone with actual eyes-on the file and get everything all squared away. I know it sounds a bit heavy handed to go that way, but I wasn't willing to risk messing it up.

K-1:

January 28, 2009: NOA1

June 4, 2009: Interview - APPROVED!!!

October 11, 2009: Wedding

AOS:

December 23, 2009: NOA1!

January 22, 2010: Bogus RFE corrected through congressional inquiry "EAD waiting on biometrics only" Read about it here.

March 15, 2010: AOS interview - RFE for I-693 vaccination supplement - CS signed part 6!

March 27, 2010: Green Card recieved

ROC:

March 1, 2012: Mailed ROC package

March 7, 2012: Tracking says "notice left"...after a phone call to post office.

More detailed time line in profile.

If something wasn't legible they would have just asked for another copy. Donot send the orginal card in mail, make an infopass to clearify why the orginal card is needed back.

Remember if you mail the card, your wife will not have any proof that she is here in the US legally, until a GC is mailed back to her. Make copies of the GC before you meet for the infopass.

BTW, all govt agencies have PC's on their desk, so to get a handwritten note would make this request out of the norm.

Yes do not have her send her actual GC in the mail - just a good, clear color photocopy of the card will suffice. Good luck!

I guess I'll make an infopass appointment. Luckily I live close to an office. I don't like the idea of sending the card in the mail but that is what the instructions clearly say.

What is really weird is that they sent this on a form that is a rejection of application and on the back there is an other field where this is written. However, like I said they cashed the check, which I don't think they do when there is a rejection of an application. Also, our daughter got a letter that said her stay is extended while the application is processing. So the application wasn't rejected.

I wish these idiots who work for the USCIS would realize the situations they put people in. I agree that instructions written by hand on the back of a form is ridiculous and unprofessional. Especially considering all the forms we have to neatly fill out and all the money we pay it is ridiculous to get an unclear handwritten message asking to mail the card to them. I'll be sure to speak my mind on Thursday when we go for the Infopass appointment.

The application is obviously processing but they say they can't process the application without the card. Also, the form says that a new application needs to be sent, but this should only apply if it was rejected. For the reasons above, the application surely wasn't rejected.

I am not an expert and I hope I am wrong, but that STINKS like big trouble. They never sent her the extension letter AND they ask for her ORIGINAL Green Card........Make an Infopass asap,to me it looks like they denied /are in the process of denying her ROC. And YES they will still take the fee.

Maybe they want to verify that the green card is authentic?

So today in the mail we get the I-797 Notice of Action saying that the application is being processed and saying the legal residency is extended for one year. Also we got the biometrics appointment notice for March 16. This is so strange. We have an infopass appointment for Thursday, and we'll go just to make sure what is going on. I still don't get why we got the original letter asking us to send the green card to them. I'm relieved that we got the papers that I was expecting to get in the first place, but this really has me scratching my head!

this really has me scratching my head!
Let us know what it turns out to be. Meanwhile, congratulations on the good news, si man!

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Was the address to mail your Wife's Green card a proper USCIS address? as has already been stated, something sounds not right to recieve a hand written letter off USCIS, was it on the USCIS paper? do not go to your local office blowing steam, be calm and ask for the letter to be verified, some other source may have been trying a scam on you and your family.

That is very good news! I hope the other letter is just a mistake :)
