I may not have a Ph.d from MIT, those figures translated mean a retirement life of 'just barely getting by,' especially if one did not save, invest or prepare for retirement.

Exactly. That is why it is a floor, not a ceiling. And, it is not just about retirement benefits, it is predominately about surviving spouses and children, and no longer being to work because of disability. Therefore, everybody that is currently paying into the program is covered, for themselves, and others that depend on their income to survive.

Thats what they are doing, They just cut by 1/3 the contribution we make to SS and that is its only source of funding. Trying to fix the economy on the backs of the elderly.
