Cincinnati Could Be Completely Powered By Renewables This Year

Cincinnati is working on a new power aggregation deal right now that could lead to the entire city being powered from 100 percent renewable energy sources. The deal, city officials say, could be finalized within the coming months and be in place for consumers by summer 2012.

Such a move would make Cincinnati the largest city in the United States to have its energy supply come from 100 percent renewable sources, and it might be accomplished without any significant cost difference for ratepayers.

The way it would work, city officials tell UrbanCincy, is by requiring power providers to include quotes for both the cheapest electricity available and 100 percent renewable electricity. In Oak Park, Ill., for example, the bids came back so competitive that city officials decided to go with the 100 percent renewable solution.

"There is no guarantee that our bids will come in the same as Oak Park's, but the question may be whether we are willing to pay an additional 1 percent to pay for renewable energy," explained Office of Environment Quality (OEQ) director Larry Falkin.

The movement towards sustainability has evidently picked up steam in Cincinnati as of late. At the first of two required public hearings, about 70 people came out to speak in favor of using completely renewable energy sources, and the environmental advocacy group Greenpeace flew a hot air ship over Cincinnati last week advocating for such change.

"The biggest thing impacting our carbon footprint is how we get our electricity," said Falkin who explained that Cincinnati currently gets approximately 85 percent of its energy from coal. "This is probably the biggest opportunity we'll have over the next several years to dramatically reduce Cincinnati's carbon footprint."

After a positive first hearing at City Council's Budget & Finance Committee, officials expect that the effort will move forward and receive approval from the full council on Wednesday. Should that take place, the request for proposals (RFP) would then go out within the next two to three weeks.

Even if the response to the city's RFP does not come back as favorable as Oak Park's, city officials may be able to structure the deal to offer consumers a choice between the cheapest electricity option and a 100 percent renewable electricity option.

"There are a lot of things Cincinnati is doing to position itself as a leader in sustainability and going green – both in the public and private sectors," Falkin concluded. "This is a significant part of that total package in terms of branding Cincinnati as a progressive city, and cities across the country may start to look to adopt the Cincinnati solution for energy."

The final Budget & Finance Committee meeting scheduled to discuss power aggregation will take place today at 1 p.m. at City Hall (map).

Funny to see a major city pull this scam. Sheep are idiots though.whistling.gif

The most common "renewable" energy source is trees. The tree huggers are cutting down all the trees and burning them and calling it "renewable" energy. They take a trainload of cut down and chipped up trees into the Burlington Electric power plant every day. The same tree huggers that tried to shut down logging when Clinton was in office are now slashing all the trees to burn for heat and electricity. ** the spotted owl, we're burning the place down!

The state of Vermont a few years ago offered to pay 90% of the construction cost for schools to convert to "renewable" energy sources for heating. (FY 2006-2008) The schools jumped all over it and for 4 years (projects approved during FY 2008 could be built with these funds even after 2008)I was building wood chip fired boiler plants all over the state! Nearly all the schools now have heating plants powered by trees. With very tall chimneys. This is to ensure the particulate falls out in Canada. Most of the boilers were made in Germany by Messershmitt, yeah the ME109 folks. Some were made right here in Vermont by ChipTec. (as in WOOD ChipTec)

Vermont is leading the country in percentage of power from "renewables" because of all the tree burning tree huggers here AND the fact that more than half our power comes from land flooded by HydroQuebec to create an excess of hydro power to sell for profit. But it was only land held by Native Canadian-Americans (AKA Indians) so who cares? The other half comes from Nuclear power.

Wow. Guess we could keep planting trees. Nice going Vermont.blink.gif

Anyone figure out how they segregate the green electricity from the carbon electricity in the transmission lines?whistling.gif

Also since all green energy is way more expensive than carbon energy and even with the HUGE SUBSIDIES how do they get the same price?

Here's the scam.

Yeah, funny how Steven never mentions that "renewables" most often means "trees". Suddenly trees are "renewable" Who knew?

Have you ever tried arguing this way in public, Gary? I think it would do you some good to get some real, live feedback with your logical fallacies.

I wonder if Quebecer's actually know the origin of all that hot air blowing up out of Vermont. I think it's safe to say that chimneys are not the only source.

This is a public forum Steven. How about some feedback. How do you feel about trees being burned for heat and electricity?

They like the hot air. They do not like the acid rain. Too bad, they are only Canadians and we need heat and electricity...burn trees!

How about we expose your logical fallacy to make it painfully obvious to you?

For starters - crude oil comes from what, Gary? Plants? No way! And plants, like trees grow! No way! So, therefore, according to Gary logic, crude oil should be included as "renewables."

But here you go, Gary. Maybe this will clear your mind:

The United States currently relies heavily on coal, oil, and natural gas for its energy. Fossil fuels are non-renewable, that is, they draw on finite resources that will eventually dwindle, becoming too expensive or too environmentally damaging to retrieve. In contrast, the many types of renewable energy resources-such as wind and solar energy-are constantly replenished and will never run out.

Most renewable energy comes either directly or indirectly from the sun. Sunlight, or solar energy, can be used directly for heating and lighting homes and other buildings, for generating electricity, and for hot water heating, solar cooling, and a variety of commercial and industrial uses.

And since you're such a literalist - yes even the sun will eventually run out but we've got a few billion years.

It will be interesting to see what the exact sources are. I agree that biomass type energy is not fully renewable, though it is better than coal (maybe its nearer to natural gas?)

I don't think there is a way to determine if your home gets renewable energy but there was a device created that can supposedly filter out nuclear energy believe it or not!

Typical non-answer with the typical mindless +1

But maybe since you are in the mood to help..

Is biomass renewable?

What is biomass, is it TREES?

How do you feel about burning tress for electricity and heat? (original question, I willaccept your direct answer, no need to copy and paste definitions...you can do it!)

Is hydro power renewable?

Is hydro power made by building dams and flooding natural terrain?

How do you feel about the actions of HydroQuebec?

All that said, Vermont being a leading state in the use of renewable energy sources, what are the main sources of renewable energy in Vermont? (hint: it is not wind and solar)

I stand by to be enlightened.
