I couldn't file online the first year either because of that, I had to do the HR block and have them file it so it was in the system and this year it allowed me to do it online with no problems

Hi Hiroin

It appears your wife is already in the USA and if she is, then your process will not be difficult. For spouses already in the US do the following:

You will need to file a W-7 ... this can only be filed when you submit your tax retrun. .. you can down load it off the internet. Your wife will need to sign this .... it is a simple form.

You must accompany this form with a notarized copy of her passport. If she is already here, the IRS requires that the copy be notarized by a US notary public. There are specific instructions and guidelines on the internet as well as to what kind of ID can be used ... mostly they want a photo ID.

*** In answer to your question, when you complete your joint tax return with the W-7 attached, you will write "APPLIED FOR" in the blank where it asks for her IRS pin number or TIN (tax ID number).

In my case, I could not file and submit on line either and ended up printing out the entire form, added the words Applied For in the TIN blank , attached the W-7 with passport copies and sent it in via snail-mail.

If in the event she is still in her home country, she would need to get a special copy made there ... some countries have official copies called APOSTILLES which are automatically recognized as an acceptable proof of notarization between certain countries. Unfortunately I don't think the Philippines issue the apostille and, like in my situation, you would be required to submit a copy that has been "certified by the issuing agency or official custodian of the original record" .... but good luck with that because it is sometimes difficult getting the IRS to accept any documentation as acceptable unless the copies are apostilles or were made and notarized here in the USA. But this only pertains when the spouse is still out of the country

If this were to apply to you , then you can visit the this site for more on that : http://www.apostilleinfo.com/

For your basic instructions on how to complete and submit the W-7, just go to: http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw7.pdf

Good luck

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014
