K1 - Can you get married in a different state to the one you will be living in?

Hi Everyone,

My hubby to be and I are planning to get married in his home town, but we will be living near his university, which is in a different US state on the opposite coast. A couple of people I know here in AUS, who are also going through the K1 process, believe this may not be allowed under the conditions of the K1. I can't find anything to suggest this, but does anyone know if you are/aren't allowed to get married in a different state to the one you will be living in? Is this going to cause any problems?

No problem about marrying in a different state. Just be sure to check that state's requirements for a marriage license. e.g. whether you need a Social Security number first, or blood tests, etc.

We reside in Maryland, but were married in the Virgin Islands (not even a state!} with no problems at all.

All the best

You can marry anywhere you wish and live anywhere you wish. Only need to comply with marriage requirements of the state you wish to marry. Marriage is recognized throughout US.

We married in Colorado, we reside in Texas

As the others have said doesn't matter one iota where you marry versus where you live as long as you follow the requirements of your state. For instance some states require you to wait a certain time between your divorce and re-marriage (not that that's an issue for you :P). Also make sure you know how to fill in the licence/marriage certificate to change your last name (if you want to). Some states have different requirements so you want to make sure you do it right :D
