Why do you think the teacher in the OP should have a note in her file; but you don't think this person at the university deserved one?

You know, I'm going to backtrack on my earlier statement in light of my recollection of this. I think there shouldn't be a note but there should be discussion between the teacher and the administration about the incident. I think we all recognise this was a boo-boo, and nothing more, but having discussion is a matter of not necessarily just doing what is right, but being seen to be doing what is "right." To ignore it probably isn't the best way forward, but to blow it out of proportion is even worse.smile.gif

OMG, I am rollicking with laughter at the idea of sending a child to another country that he might be shot! It's a veritable laugh riot!!!

I thought it was pretty funny too.

That sounds like my kind of America!

It sounds like Mexico, actually. And if you're against sending Mexicans to Mexico.....

kimchi and dog?"

I told this to my Korean-American boyfriend and he thought the staff member's comment was funny, btw.

It is pretty funny.

And quite sad that an Asian-American (was the student even Korean? Because as you probably already know... Koreans LOVE other Asians!) would be offended over something said about a nationality (that he probably didn't even belong to) just because he's the same race as them. You don't catch us getting all sensitive when someone talks about Australians.

I had to look it up -- he was a Korean student. And it was the Korean-American Society that went bananas, not the Asian-American Society. (Very careful gradations, as you well know.)

My boyfriend is merciless in his jokes about his heritage. He's from Tennessee, and growing up in the South as an Asian was... interesting to say the least. He grew a very thick skin and found that making even more tasteless jokes than rednecks could make about his Asian background was the way to go. In fact, the nickname he likes to be called the most by friends when entering a bar is one I can't type here without getting reported myself.blush.gif

He also tells me not to worry about him running off with one of the Korean schoolgirls at the nearby high school, because he's far too poor for them. I had no idea there was even a stereotype about that!

Well, that's at least a little bit better than just a "generic" Asian being upset by the comments.

And what I really wonder is why people get upset over those things. I remember a few years back when a certain golfer made a joke about what was going to be served at the next dinner. It would be a big deal if the people being talked about didn't eat those things or like those things but it's stuff they actually like to eat. Kimchi and Kaegogi are on the menu at most fine restaraunts in Seoul.

My Korean nickname is Noguri MC or Mokda Monster.

I tried my luck with quite a few school girls and they didn't like me either. They kept saying, "Ahn day, mal chaji!"

A 63-year-old Arlington math teacher who faced termination after she made an ethnically insensitive comment to a student should be allowed to return to teaching, though not at her campus, an independent hearing examiner has recommended.

Independent Hearing Examiner Jess Rickman III, in a 23-page opinion, issued late Wednesday said the district failed to provide sufficient grounds to terminate Shirley Bunn, who had taught at Barnett Junior High School since 1999. Bunn has been on paid leave since Sept. 30, the day of the incident.

So, the recommendation is actually that she keep her job but change campus.

And seriously, a 23 page report for this?!?!

Many Americans are way too sensitive about race and the political correctness is out of control, if not down-right off the chart at times.

I'd ask the BF but he speaks about three phrases in Korean. However, they are all dirty so he may know one of these!laughing.gif

Guess somebody has been teaching the little brat he's special because he's Mexican.

You know this comments reminds me of that show "Jon and Kate plus 8". In some random scene from some random episode I happened to catch (must have been a slow day :S) I recall those children teasing each other by saying "I look more Asian than you!" It was apparent to me that in order to teach those kids pride in their Asian side their parents made it seem worse to look American, that rather than being as good as everyone else (no matter what they or others look like) they said they were MORE special because they were Asian looking. This shows just how easy it is to make the wrong impression on little kids and I think that's what's happened with this kid... just as you said. Someone told him that being Mexican makes him better and more special than everyone else.

I will say though in some of my homesickness days where I lament the loss of good milk, bread, cheese, chocolate etc that some American's have, in their frustration with me, said "well then go back to Australia". Sometimes it's not about wanting to go back. Sometimes I just need to talk about what I miss (like summer when it's winter etc).

For such an experienced and well-respected teacher her reaction just makes me thinks he's probably done it before and she just finally had enough. I don't think there's really anything wrong with it, it was a valid comment and brought out of frustration, not discrimination.

wait, so almost 5 months ago this happened and JUST NOW they are determining what should happen? So you're telling me those students have been stuck with a substitute teacher all this time, with probably sub-par teaching in the class now?

Oh how lovely. All in the name of political correctness.

That ####### child should get one lash for every student that has been disserviced by his actions.

He got it right, but 22 pages of that was report was likely drivel to please the PC crowd.

...and with that the level of discourse drops once more.

Why is it appropriate to whip a child repeatedly for this? We all -- even pinko commie libruls like me -- seem to agree here that the child was being disruptive. The teacher said something stupid but should not have been officially reprimanded and this got WAY bigger than it ever should have been.

Frankly I'd rather see the administration pilloried for making a tempest in a teacup.

I doubt it. The levels of bureaucracy within the administration of public schools are out of control, all in the name of "greater accountability." There are rules that school boards (and yo, this is Texas we're talking about, not the Bay Area) set in place and they have to follow them lest they break their own rules, no matter how nutso they may seem (and probably are). Add years upon years of reactive rule-making to deal with every little matter and you end up with a 23-page report for one stray comment.

Perhaps if the guidelines allowed for greater flexibility rather than mandating processes that result in OTT responses like what happened here we could avoid such situations.
