A Texas teacher is fighting to keep her job after allegedly telling a Hispanic student to “go back to Mexico,” according to a Fox 4 News story.

Two-time “Teacher of the Year” Shirley Burns, 63, was handing out Title 1 forms to her 8th grade class at Barnett Junior High School in Arlington, the television station reported. A disruptive student requested a Spanish version of the form, saying, “I’m Mexican. I’m Mexican.”

Burns told the student that he could get a Spanish version in the main office, but the student continued to repeat, “I’m Mexican,” according to the television station.

Bunn responded, “[Then] go back to Mexico,” according to Fox 4.

“It was almost instantaneous. I thought, ‘God, I don’t believe that came out of my mouth,’” she told The Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “It was a very, very hard week, the end of six weeks. It was late in the day. It was a Friday. We were on the third day of the first curriculum assessment and I knew it wasn’t going well. It was just an extremely bad day.”

Bunn has been placed on administrative leave as the Arlington School District is reviewing the case. An examiner has recommended that the school board allow Bunn to return to her job.

The school board could reject the examiner’s recommendation and fire Bunn.

She had a bad day. If this never happens again I'd say no big deal. Give her a second chance or at least let her retire with all her benefits (she's 61).

Plus, she sounds contrite. That counts for a lot.

What she said is fair.

If the kid was saying that out loud over and over again, then the little ####### should be smacked and sent back to Mexico!

I guess you wouldn't last long as a teacher Paul. Which is probably not a bad thing.

I actually got smacked in the back of the head by a substitute teacher once. Didn't hurt but it was loud as hell. Class was being extremely disruptive and I was the worst. I probably deserved more than that. The last I would have done back then is tell anyone about it. I would have got it 10x worse from my dad if he found out and I wanted my freinds to forget as fast as possible so they would quit hassling me.

That's exactly it isn't it. Back just a couple of short decades ago, schools had paddles and could whoop your ####### if you acted like a little brat and parents actually knew what discipline was. This day and age kids are more out of control than ever because teachers have zero authority and everything they say/do is scrutinized to a T. It's ridiculous. A lot of brats today could do for a good ####### beating to knock some sense into them,

Was the student causing a ruckus and should he have been disciplined? Yes.

Was the teacher correct to blurt out "Go back to Mexico!" No. (She realised this.)

Should this be an issue for her school to raise with her? Yes.

Should she be disciplined for what was an obvious slip of the tongue? No. (And the examiner recognised this too.)

Should we be beating children? No.

Should we tell them they are terrorists for saying in English that they are Mexican? No.

Should several of those who have posted about the necessity of speaking English in America, and who are native English-speakers themselves, consider the clarity and precision with which they express themselves in their mother tongue lest they not appear to be making a decent stab at speaking English?

Send him over the border he will get plenty of brass and lead (I think that should make up the medal)...lol

OMG, I am rollicking with laughter at the idea of sending a child to another country that he might be shot! It's a veritable laugh riot!!!
