Finding work with out paid experience in the US is hard

Hello everyone. I've been applying for a job as a RN in about a week now. I've received calls for job offers and continuing education options the same day I posted my resume to different websites online. Unfortunately, employers are looking for paid RN experience here in the US. I just migrated here last month. I felt kinda sad being rejected even though I have the necessary requirements to work. They just keep on telling me to call back once I have enough experience. I was just wondering, how could I ever possibly obtain such USRN experience if they are not willing to help and hire me? Any suggestions? :( How was your job hunting so far?

You've only been applying a week? I'd give it more time. I don't know the field, but I think it's premature to say that everyone requires US experience when you've only been looking for a week.

AOS for my husband

It's really, really hard and we totally feel your frustration. My husband is an IT Specialist and all of his IT experience was in Colombia and not in the US. He's been applying and interviewing with different companies for a couple of months now, even having second and third interviews and nothing, they all want that US experience which is a huge bummer.

I say just keep at it and don't give up until something good comes along. Given your field, would it be possible to even consider volunteering at a local hospital or clinic for a while in order to get that experience they want? Just an idea.

Took my wife about 4 months to find a job as a lab tech w/o any paid experience but she is overqualified for the position she got makes substantially less than she would if she was back in Canada.

Did you try applying to a nursing home or LTAC or palliative? That is what some new RN's do here in Dallas and they get hired! When you have the experience they want, you can re apply to those hospitals and still keep the nursing home work, so you end up having part time or prn job!

Hospitals can be choosy. Nursing homes do not have that luxury. The work is easier, but the pay is lousy. You want experience; this is the way to go. Things may have changed, but taking care of grandma and grandpa requires less skill then an ICU or NICU. It is paid though!!

I think many would disagree about nursing homes!! Tend to be a lot more grunt work as they tend to be less staffed!! High turn around, so can be easier to get into. Its a hard time for no experience RN's throughout the USA!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

I think it's all the same no matter what field. Took me a while before I got my current job at a bank. Before that, I had to swallow my pride and start at the bottom with less fulfilling jobs just to gain experience. But I prepared myself for this. It's a little sacrifice just so I can be with my husband. Just be more patient. :star:

You were the gal from the bay area, right? It's tough; like I said previously, it has taken a few of my bay area friends who are new grad RNs 1-2 years to find a job. I would try broadening your search out as far as you can, apply for clinics, nursing homes, school nurse, etc etc. Less glamorous, most people don't want to do it, but it will get your foot in the door by having some US experience.

Try volunteering in a hospital to get a foot in the door or contact temp agencies. Be prepared to work for minimum or for free. Contact the red cross or any of the disaster relief agencies.

You need to get people to talk to you in person not over the phone, that can make it much easier to get a job.

All done ;-)

Right now, it is hard even for an RN with US experience to get a job here but keep trying am sure you'll get one.

I agree Skilled nursing facilities may be harder to work at since you have less staff. An RN can have 18-25 patients depending on a facility. So, that person is in charge of patients that just got transferred from the hospital. And now with the economy, hospitals are discharging patients that are still somewhat unstable.

I think many would disagree about nursing homes!! Tend to be a lot more grunt work as they tend to be less staffed!! High turn around, so can be easier to get into. Its a hard time for no experience RN's throughout the USA!!
