Definitely the food. Unlike Mexican restaurants, there are no Nicaraguan restaurants or markets in Chicago. To the OP, I don't know where you live but I know what you mean about the food not being the same. However, here in Chicago there are tons of Mexican restaurants and they use authentic products from Mexico. The food is great and very close to the "real deal", at least that's what our Mexican friends say!

I also miss paying $20 for a doctors visit instead of $220+ and being able to drive around without fear of getting lost.

I miss sidewalks. I miss food. I especially miss looking at a menu and not having to figure out why all the "vegetables" are battered and deep fried. I miss hearing 10 or so different languages any given day (or even just different accents) while walking down the street... on a sidewalk. I miss not having to pay thousands of dollars to NOT DIE. I miss voting. I miss walking into a building and not seeing signs that read "no weapons". I miss seasons. I also miss about a million other things... and I moved almost 2 1/2 years ago. I've given up on the idea that I may one day see things here as "normal" or even "acceptable", and I'm fine with that. Living with my husband is absolutely worth all the homesickness/frustration/confusion etc. So while I'm complaining, I'm not really complaining.

I miss my family and that is about it...

I agree...you can always find an alternative to a food you liked in your home country but there is no alternative for your family.

I miss fresh organic food and fruits.

You don't have Farmers Markets where you live?

My wife and I go nearly every Saturday morning. All organic produce and fruits, eggs from free range chicken, spices from organic gardens, basically everything our heart desires. My wife also has a small garden in our back yard, so we can enjoy all the organic food we like. One day, when we retire, we want to buy a small farm house somewhere where it's nice and peaceful and have a cow and a bunch 'a chicken and a couple horsies and enjoy the simpler way of life.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

There are some little details I miss: for instance, there's no taxis circulating freely in the streets or out of stores as in Mexico, so if you don't have a car is complicated!. Buses don't run very often, sometimes you must wait for an hour if you miss them... Bus transportation to another cities is complicated too: sometimes you must take 3 buses to get to a city that is 30 minutes by car!

There are no many copy shops: even if I need just one photocopy ,that implies a long drive to Office Depot!

As Crlnd said, not rushing when I go to a restaurant! Even at home my husband is accostumed to eat fast and we don't have "sobremesa"(having a post-dinner chat).

I miss the cheap street food. I miss hanging out with my friends during friday night after work. I miss beaches. I miss going to church for sunday mass in any time of the day since Manila have masse from 4am-8pm, so if I wake up late, I can still attend, not like here, 3 times in the morning and no afternoon. I miss Filipino pastry.

I miss my family first of all, we were all very close and they're always together and I feel left out. I miss my best friends there, you can't build a friendship in a few months here. I miss the food I can't even explain how food here grosses me out, I've started cooking a lot just because I'm so homesick. I miss the TV and movies there, watching all the American media got old after a while. I miss the beautiful weather, Chicago has very brutal winters it's so depressing.

Vegemite! Decent beetroot on a burger (the beetroot in the US is awful), eta bbq sauce, vegemite, meat pies, public transport,... did i mention vegemite? lol

I can help with the vegemite and ETA BBQ sauce. I have lots of links to Aussie food websites here in the US :) It looks expensive but is cheaper than shipping from Aus :D Come over to the Aussie chat thread (in my signature).
