You can get DL upon showing SS card and a passport with the visa, but there could be some differences depending on the specific state. Problem is it will have expiration date same as your I-94. I would wait until you have the EAD of GC. Best -if you are still not here- is to get an international driver's license. You would also be able to drive with your DL for some time.

Finally, there is an exchange agreement by which you can exchange your license; but this depends on the specific state you will be and the country where the DL is from.

he never got his license while he was there, and doesn't have time now. He never really need one anyways. I'll check after we've applied for that then :) thank you !

I was just about to post a topic about this!

My situation is in Florida though.

I will be entering on a K-1 in a few weeks, hopefully!

My USC Fiancee is insured with Allstate.

I have a full Irish license, clean.

I have visited her a number of times, and driven her car. Now, we were under the assumption that once SHE has insurance, anyone with a license is covered to drive HER car, with her permission, of course!

A few weeks ago, we second guessed ourselves, called Allstate and were told; 'ya, once they have a full licence, they're good.'

Today, she called them to change her address and asked them again (it was a different person on the phone), this time he said; 'No, he needs to have an American license to be covered.'

So, which is true? Any ideas!?

It makes sense in my head that if she has insurance, then I can drive... Right!?

Find and read her actual policy document (the long version with all the definitions and legal mumbo-jumbo). Only THAT document will give you a definitive answer. Anything else will be nothing but guesswork and conjecture.

BOTH answers are true, you either misunderstood or didn't ask the right question the first time. For instance the first one to me reads like she asked "Is anyone who drives my car insured?" (so the word "once" implies that people on learners licences can't) or "Can my fiance drive my car when he gets here?" (assuming she said you have an Irish licence the word "once" implies a US licence). The second time I bet she asked specifically about you driving on a foreign licence.

And no, just because she has insurance YOU are not covered. I know my husbands insurance wouldn't insure me on my Aussie licence (also a full licence, been driving for years, clean record) because it doesn't mean I know how to drive HERE (on the other side of the road with several VASTLY different rules). I could drive a hire car no problem, but not Tony's vehicles.

You need to find out if she can amend her policy to include your foreign licence otherwise she will have to change companies. Some will cover foreign licences but I don't believe it's cheap.

You might just need to hire a car once in a while.

I got my license the same way every 16 year old does. I took the written and road test once i had my green card.. :) when we got married hubby changed his insurance info to married so my name was in there but not as a driver. I was only listed as a driver once i got my permit. In PA you are allowed to drive with your foreign license for a short period of time so that was enough time for me to get the real thing

My Journey:

We met through a study-abroad program in Shanghai, China in August of 2009

We got engaged March of 2010

I received my K1 VISA in 6 months (June-December 2010)

We were married 04/02/2011
I received my conditional 2-year greencard (AOS) in 2.5 months with no interview (April-June 2011)

Our son was born 02/03/2013

I received my masters degree in Speech-Language Pathology 04/17/2013

I received my 10-year greencard (ROC) in 3 months with no interview (March-June 2013)

My husband returned from deployment 06/20/2013

My naturalization journey took 4 months (April-August 2014)

I became a US citizen on 08/01/2014

Received passport in 3 weeks (regular processing)

Right, but did you have to clear that with the insurance people? The DMV? Or did you just drive his car, without telling anyone!?

Right, but did you have to clear that with the insurance people? The DMV? Or did you just drive his car, without telling anyone!?

You have to clear it with insurance if you actually want to be covered. You CAN drive whoevers car you want but if you crash it you run the risk that you're not covered and you just destroyed a vehicle and she doesn't get money for a new one. Or, god forbid, you have an accident and hurt someone else as well as yourself and insurance won't cover you or them so the other injured party sues you for their medical fees and a new car and you also have your own medical fees to worry about. No matter which way you look at it it's bad.

The US medical system is expensive. My SIL had a motorcycle accident that cost over $250K in medical fees. You WANT to be sure your medical fees and the vehicle are insured. It's not only whether YOU are a good driver, it's everyone else around you that you're relying on to drive well.
