fashion in US and the UK

To all the UK people :)

Im just wondering what you all think of the fashion in America compared to the UK? Do you miss the UK clothes, and do you find any shops here with similar fashions? I went back home (to England) for Christmas, I havn't been there in 4 years and it made me realise how I missed the shops there. While I admit some of the fashions there drive me nuts (too young etc), I did enjoy shopping there, and like the cut of the clothes. I've never really liked the clothes here that much and have ended up slumping into the tshirt and jeans culture, which is ok in hot and dry texas I suppose but not all the time, but Ive never found jeans to fit properly here and I still order them from Next !

Also, have you noticed how nobody dresses up here to go out to eat? My mom couldnt believe when they visited us the year before last, we went out to eat steak for New Years eve and she saw people in sweatpants and baggy tshirts :)

So I was just wondering on everyone else's take as I'm curious :)

No offense meant to the Americans here...

My favourite shop ever is in the US and it's Torrid. I can't wait to live within 30 mins of a store! I love their clothes and style. It's a much nicer plus size range than I find here in the uk.

Last time I was over with Jess we were shopping to start building up my wardrobe out there. I'm a jeans and t-shirt kinda guy anyway so the Mid-West agrees with my fashion taste :D The prices were a lot easier on the wallet too

I have to say it doesnt matter where in the us i go (it can be walmart or it can be some high end over priced store) I LOVE the jeans.. i can not find a single pair of jeans in the UK that fit me as well as any of the ones ive got while in the states!

And in reply to what ceresa said about dressing up.. When im with my hubby in the states i always get asked "why have you dressed up??" and i havent lol! I wear pretty much what i would wear to go shopping or walk the dog or even clean the house! And its not like im high maintance because being an army wife ive learnt to get ready to go out in under 10 mins..shower and all lol! I guess the fashion is just different. My hubby even went as far as telling me that what i was wearing one day "hasnt been worn in america since the 80s" haha. Cheeky #######.

and Adriene H i watched that too! The pineapple and palm tree dresses? W o w.

for me it's a case of the grass is always greener - when i'm in the US i miss topshop and london vintage shops, and when i'm in the UK i miss all the cute boutique shops in new orleans & forever 21. i will definitely miss primark once i'm there permanently though - even my USC fiance is a convert, he always asks me to pick up socks & pants to bring over!

luckily people in new orleans dress kinda crazy, so you never feel self-conscious if you like to wear heels and colourful dresses all the time like me! but when we go back to new hampshire for the holidays to see my fiance's family, it's a whole different story, and people look so disturbed if you're not wearing a fleece AT ALL TIMES, including out to a nice restaurant :o

It's cool seeing all your replies :) To USArmywifey, thats great that you love the jeans here. Are you tall? I'm just 5.2 so they never seem to fit me right. As for the 80s... I dressed my 15 month old in some clothes from Next the other day and my husband too said she looked like she was from the 80s... lol, but he still had to admit he liked her little outfit. I do love the clothes they have for babies and children here though !!

Everyday Joes in the UK seem to be more fashion conscious than in the US which is something I like. It's like the clothes in the UK aren't... as boring maybe? Like even the cheap stuff is cute?

I have to admit prior to moving to the US I didn't wear jeans all that much and my t-shirts were more chicky, if I wore t-shirts (plus singlets and stuff 'cause it was hot). I'm sitting her 2 1/2 years later wondering exactly what I DID wear back home because here its jeans and t-shirts ALL the time and I know it wasn't the case at home. I think I was wearing dress-pants more often and prettier shoes.

For a while there when I first arrived I was just wearing my hubbies t-shirts (and sometimes still do) because I prefer the cut and the material to the girls ones here because they seem too see-through or too flimsy. I really need to go shopping and get a girls wardrobe again. Not working meant it was pointless spending money for stuff that we didn't really *need*.

I definately agree im from the UK an used to enjoy dressing up but people here just dont seem to care, the culture here seems to be Jeans an t's or baggy sweatshirts. My hubby who is from the UK also but now a US citizen for almost 20yrs would say why u wearing that its a bit dressy, all I had on was white trousers with a nice top and shoes to me it was casual dress lol but I aint changing I love my clothes an will continue to wear what I feel comfortable in regardless of looks or comments lol.

I have to laugh at this. When I first lived in the UK back in 2007 I can remember having an absolute breakdown in some shop. The, what I consider, very busy and bold prints were too much for me. I couldn't find a single pair of jeans that didn't sit so far down on my butt I felt like I was mooning everyone. I'm a rather plain person when it comes to clothes and prints just aren't me. My poor husband had to rush me out of the store...LMAO. I honestly thought I was just going to have to sit home naked for the rest of my life there. I got used to it though, and finally found some jeans that fit properly for me and some tops that didn't make me feel like I was screaming HEY LOOK AT ME!!!! I guess it all depends on what you're used to.

Hubby on the other hand LOVES shopping for clothes in the US. I honestly think he likes clothes shopping more than me. BUT, doesn't matter to me either way now....I'm looking forward to shopping over in the UK again....

So today I'm babysitting for a friend and instead of my usual tshirt and trainers look I'm wearing a top with jeans and boots...still extremely casual and my friend said I look really nice. Lol I feel overdressed and all it is is jeans and a top I got from the uk! I did likethe look of some of the tops at forever 21 (the modest ones) but sadly I am too old for there. My husband noticedthe first time he came to England he said even older people dress trendy whereas in the US once you reach a certain age you stop dressing fashionably. I agree that 40 yr olds shoudn't wear 18 yr old clothes but there's still ways of looking modest and trendy. It seems here the shops for my age expect us to wear boring button down blouses if we want to dress up alittle. Just cus I'm 38 years old and a mom doesn't mean I want to dress boring. But if anyone knows of some nice shops let me know :)

Yeah, im quite tall for a woman, im about 5ft 7/5ft 8ish so i guess i got lucky when i got my dads height :) And the clothes for kids in the usa are sooo much more adorable than anything ive ever seen in the uk, my friend over there has a little girl whos 1 and i LOVE her wardrobe! So cute! And everyone seems to put bows on there little girls over there.. i dont know if its something ive missed in the uk or just something that they only do in the us, but thats also adorable :) I cant wait to start trying for kids so i can start buying cute little outfits for them!

for me its all about Target and Old Navy for pretty much everything. I like the plain tops and jeans. I'm very casual! Although for a special occasion I'll shop at Anthropologie for a dress or something, like for a wedding. IN THE SALE though

Yep definately the clothes for the kiddos are so cute here in the US. Gymboree and Crazy 8 are really nice shops (I think)... and they make everything match, from the bows down to the socks ! England can't compeat with the baby clothes!
