I haven't started AOS packet yet for my SO, but already have the SSN & married, etc...

Went to go get a CA ID card from dmv (so my wife doesn't needa take her foreign passport everywhere), but I got a letter saying that

the department of homeland security - bureau of immigrations and customs enforcement is unable to validate the documentation presented with your application.

When she applied at dmv, dmv made copies of her passport and the arrival stub in her passport.

I dont know what else to submit

or is it that she can't get a CA ID card until she does her AOS and get a green card???

Every state is different with Id cards and drivers license's but in a lot of cases you can't get either until you get the EAD or Green card. I only just got my Arizona state ID today, i used my EAD card and social security card. I couldn't get one earlier because i didn't have enough ID in my married name. I had my SS card and marriage certificate but no photo ID, only in my maiden name.

Finally time for AOS.......

12/07/11 Sent AOS package

12/09/11 AOS package delivered

01/31/12 Received email update from USCIS saying that we've been scheduled for an interview

I think that legally you have to carry your passport until you get your Green Card, can't say i feel safe doing that though, i never take it anywhere.

I'm in CA and they denied mine too (with I-94/ k1 visa) but the payment remains valid for a year (i think) so when she gets her EAD or Greencard make a photocopy of that and send it in. I am still waiting for my ID card and I've been here about 5 months already.

Lol he doesn't carry his passport anywhere and we aren't too worried about him carrying it. If he goes anywhere I'm always there and there is always someone at home who can bring his passport right away if he ever needs it. I'm more afraid of him losing it then him being caught without it.

 Indeed! We keep the originals of ALL our important cards and IDs in the safe, and just carry around high quality copies of 'em. If ya lose those things, its like dropping $450 bucks outta yer pocket!

I'm the same, sooo scared to lose any of my ID when i have so little, especially my passport, would be so hard and such a pain to replace. Copies of things are definitely the right idea

We're in Texas, but something annoying about the delay in getting a state ID is that here you can't even buy alcohol with anything BUT a TX ID (it's at the store's discretion to enforce this or not). My 32-year-old husband had several embarrassing experiences at the grocery store trying to buy beer or wine with his Peruvian national ID with birth date. Even if we were shopping together, we sometimes couldn't purchase because we didn't BOTH have the state ID. Ridiculous.

States need to get it together and stop creating situations where new legal immigrants can't properly begin their lives upon arrival. And this goes way beyond buying a bottle of wine, obviously.

op - This is strange. My wife got her ID with her married name wiith just her I-94, passport, and marriage cert. This was in October 2011. This was in Northern Cal. It's good for 5 years.

That doesn't sound right. Somebody goofed. The ID should expire when the legal presence document expires.

Limited Term Legal Presence

All original and pending driver license or identification cards will expire on the expiration date of his/her birth date and legal presence document (BD/LP) issued by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Your BD/LP document must have an expiration date 30 or more days from your application date. If your BD/LP document has an expiration date less than 30 days, you will not be able to start a driver license or identification card application.

If your BD/LP document has an expiration date of less than 60 days, you may complete your licensing requirements (written/vision/driving tests), but you will need to submit another BD/LP document with an expiration date of 60 days or more before your driver license or identification card is mailed to you.

Before your limited term driver license expires, the department will mail out an “extension” letter with instructions on how to complete your application for a driver license.

If your current name no longer matches the name on your birth date/legal presence document, see "True Full Name" and "How to Change Your Name" for more information.
