Samuel L. Jackson is making news for some candid remarks about President Barack Obama and why he supported him in 2008. What did the actor say exactly?

That he pulled the lever for Obama because of his race.

In an interview with Ebony, Jackson said, "I voted for Barack because he's black. 'Cuz that's why other folks vote for other people, because they look like them ... That's American politics, pure and simple. [Obama's] message didn't mean [bleep] to me."

Jackson then went on to drop the n-word many times discussing Obama, telling the magazine, "When it comes down to it, they wouldn't have elected a [bleep]."

"Because ... what's a [bleep]? A [bleep] is scary. Obama ain't scary at all. [bleeps] don't have beers at the White House. [bleeps] don't let some white dude, while you in the middle of a speech, call [him] a liar," he said, referring to Joe Wilson's famous outburst.

"A [bleep] would've stopped right there and said, ‘Who the f--k said that?' I hope Obama gets scary in the next four years, 'cuz he ain't gotta worry about getting re-elected."

There you go. The only thing missing is a Snakes on a Plane reference.

Provocative word choice aside, Jackson's point appears to be that some people vote based on race, and that Obama won because while he is black, he does not fit negative African-American stereotypes. For more on the subject, see Rock, Chris.

Samuel L. Jackson made a surprising confession in the March issue of Ebony.

"I voted for Barack because he was black. Cause that’s why other folks vote for other people — because they look like them," Jackson said, according to the New York Post.

He contended that Obama's message wasn't important, since he believes most politicians will say anything to get elected.

"That’s American politics, pure and simple. [Obama’s] message didn’t mean [anything] to me. In the end, he’s a politician. I just hoped he would do some of what he said he was gonna do. I know politicians ... lie cause they want to get elected," he continued, according to TMZ.

The president is banking on African American support for November's election. Earlier this month, he unveiled a new push to court black voters.

"He needs the support of the African-American community in order to continue to bring positive change to our community," campaign advisor Stefanie Brown told The Huffington Post.

However, not everyone in the community thinks race is enough of a reason to vote for Obama. J.C. Watts, a prominent black Republican, is a vocal Newt Gingrich supporter and Princeton professor Cornel West told Sean Hannity that while he believed the president deserves a second term, he wished he would be "more intense in terms of his commitment to poor and working people."

Totally not racist at all. Not coming from Samuel L. Jackson, anyway.

Had Newt Gingrich said something like that...

people who didn't vote for Obama on substance? Really?

Please. I maybe know a hanful of people that actually voted for him on substance and even then it was ignorant of wht was really going to happen.

the overwhelming majority of Obama voters didn't know who the hell he was and voted for him because #1 - they thought he spoke well. #2 - their friend was voting for him. #3 - He's not W. #4 - He's black and you're black so it's a must. #5 - Hippie White Guilt. and that's about it.

Neither case would fit the definition of racism. I think the word you were thinking of is bigoted. The words bigot and racist are often interchanged, but they are actually not interchangeable, although it is possible to be both.

Well you couldn't vote for the guy based on his political record. He didn't have any. He pretty much started running for president when he got elected to the Senate.

And yet he won. Kind of speaks volumes of the other candidate. One would have thought the take home message would have been to take the primaries more seriously next time, but by the looks of things, it appears there was no one home to get the message.

Not sure if speaks more to the other candidate or the U.S. electorate.

Jackson chose Obama because of the color of his skin. That's racist.

There were no feelings involved, no preconceived notions. Strictly skin color. That's racism.

Well, technically no. Being a racist is believing that one race is superior to the other. It has nothing to do with necessarily voting for someone because of the color of their skin. It's ignorant, biased, stupid, etc... but racist only fits if people were believing that Obama was superior because he was black or that he would destroy the country because he was black, etc...

It's not about superiority or discrimination or anything "negative" at all. It's simply basing something on race alone. That's what Jackson did. He voted Obama because of Obama's skin color. That's racist.

And this is important to me because...why exactly? Am I shocked? No. Offended? No. Surprised even? No. Do I care who Samuel L Jackson votes for or why? No.

Obama will get the huge majority of the black vote this election also, even though blacks are far worse off than before, unless they consider huge increases in public benefits to be good...which they may. But he cannot win with the black vote, he needs the votes of the country club whites, and others. As usual it will be the 40% in the middle that vote both ways on occasion that make the difference.

So what? Yes it is. And each person can vote or not vote for whatever reason they choose. Jackson chooses to be racist in his vote. His choice and the choice of many other blacks. So what?

So black people are still allowed to be racist and white people aren't. Until that changes, we'll still have racism in this country.

If we truly want to eradicate this "negative" from our midst we must call it out every single time. Not just those times when whitey's doing it.

There are not any white racists? Really. The ones that want to maintian illegal alines as a second class workforce to provide profits to corporations are not racist? Yes we have racism and it is institutionalized.

As for me if you want to vote FOR Obama because he is black, that is OK, if you want to vote for someone else because Obama is black, that is OK also. It IS your vote, Jackson's vote, whoever's vote. As it happens I am not racist and I will not vote for Obama, but not because he is black. I would not vote for him if he was white.

I am certainly not going to suggest we have voting police o task who we will vote for and why.
